Campbell 4th, Guillaume tied for 2nd after 18 holes of Big South men's golf championship

NINETY SIX, S.C. – Campbell University is nine strokes off the lead and Vaita Guillaume is tied for second place after Monday's first round of the Big South Conference men's golf championship.

The Camels shot a one-over-par 289 on the par-72, 7120-yard Patriot Golf Club layout and trail 32nd-ranked Liberty (280) heading into Tuesday's second round of the 54-hole event.  Charleston Southern and Coastal Carolina are tied for second at 285, followed by Campbell and Winthrop (291) in the 9-school field.

A senior from Papeete, Tahiti, Guillaume played bogey-free golf on Monday and recorded birdies on the par-four 1st as well as the par-five 5th and 18th holes.  Chase Marinell of Liberty made five birdies in his 5-under-par round of 67 to lead the 45-man field.

Liberty's Robert Karlsson, Ross Thomson of Charleston Southern and Charlie Winegardner of Coastal Carolina are tied with Guillaume for second place at three-under 69.

Twelve golfers in the field shot even-par, or better, Monday, including Campbell freshman Grant Houser, who is tied for 11th at 72.

A first-team all-conference performer, Guillaume entered the event atop the Big South Conference and ranked 7th nationally in stroke average (70.46), while standing 2nd in the country in par-4 scoring (3.93).

A freshman from Holly Springs, N.C., Houser had 4 birdies in the first 9 holes and made the turn in 32, but had bogeys on the back nine before birdying 18 to close at level par.

Campbell senior Mitch Gray and sophomore Amanjyot Singh are tied for 23rd place at two-over 74.  Both played the back side at even par.  In only his second collegiate start, freshman Kurtis Straw shot 87.

"We got off to a good start today.  Grant played a beautiful round on the front. Vaita was a couple of strokes under par and we were in position to do some damage," said head coach John Crooks.  "Unfortunately, we made a couple of mistakes coming in that put us behind the 8-ball.  Nine shots is not a lot to make up, but we've got to play better tomorrow."
