BUIES CREEK, N.C. – After winning his third tournament of the year, Vaita Guillaume of Campbell University has been named Choice Hotels Big South Conference men's golfer of the week.
A senior from Papeete, Tahiti, Guillaume finished first for the third time in his last four events on Tuesday at the Bash at the Beach. He shot 7-under 206 (69-67-70) to lead Campbell to the team title in Myrtle Beach, S.C. Guillaume's total tied for the 6th-best 54-hole score in Campbell men's golf (Division I era) history.
Paced by Guillaume's 3 rounds in red numbers, the Camels won their 3rd tournament of the year (291-285-285—861) defeating 3 other Big South schools, including runner-up Gardner-Webb by one stroke.
Guillaume lowered his Big South-leading stroke average to 70.65 by producing his 5th top-10 outing of the season. He also won the Georgetown Intercollegiate before sharing top honors at the Kiawah Classic and the Bash at the Beach event.
He enters next week's UCF Rio Pinar Invitational with 17 career top-10 performances as well as a No.-38 ranking in the latest Golfstat Cup rating.
Guillaume's five top-10 finishes stand second only to Robert Karlsson of Liberty (7) among Big South players.
Ranked 67th in the latest Golfweek national listing, Campbell features four golfers among the Big South's top 12 in stroke average. In addition to Guillaume's league-leading mark, Amanjyot Singh stands 10th (73.55), Mitch Gray 11th (73.85) and Grant Houser 12th (73.89).
