Andrew Gai leads Golfweek Program Challenge; Campbell 2nd in team standings

PAWLEY'S ISLAND, S.C. – Andrew Gai recorded the best debut round score in Campbell University men's golf history with an 8-under-par 64 to take the lead after 18 holes of the Golfweek Program Challenge men's tournament at True Blue Golf Club.

A freshman from Westport, Conn., Gai fired six birdies on the back nine and had nine on the day to tie the school record-low round set by Simon Dunn in 2001 and equaled by Vaita Guillaume in 2010 and 2011.

Gai leads the 60-player field by two strokes over Tomasz Anderson of Jacksonville State and Central Arkansas' Pep Angles, both of who shot six-under 66 on the par-72, 6940-yard True Blue layout.

Jacksonville State leads the 12-school event at 12-under 276, one stroke in front of Campbell (277).  South Florida and Central Arkansas are tied for third at 10-under 278, followed by East Carolina (281) and a three-way deadlock between Missouri-Kansas City, UNC Wilmington and Boston College for sixth place at even-par 288.

Campbell freshman Grant Houser of Holly Springs, N.C., also impressed in his collegiate debut with a three-under 69 to tie for seventh place heading into Monday's second round of the 54-hole event.  Houser's opening round included five birdies.

Senior Mitch Gray is tied for 17th place at one-under 71 after a round that included four birdies.  Guillaume, a senior from Papeete, Tahiti, is tied for 32nd at one-over 73, while sophomore Amanjyot Singh is tied for 54th at plus-four 76.
