Men's Golf Stands Third at Lonnie D. Small Spring Classic

BUIES CREEK, N.C.-Tied for fifth overall with a two-under 70, freshman Matt Moot led Campbell men's golf to a third place finish after one round, as the Fighting Camels scored a 294 at the Lonnie D. Small Spring Classic at Keith Hills Country Club No. 1.

Zach Drescher, another CU freshman stands in 11th place after day one, shooting par with a 72, while junior Mark Coppell is tied for 16th with a two-over 74.

Elon leads the 15-school tourney with a one-over 289, while Phoenix senior Jimmy Lytle collected a five-under 67 on the day, leading all individuals. Florida Gulf Coast sits in second place just in front of the Fighting Camels with a 293. San Francisco (298) checked in fourth on the day with Stetson and USC Upstate coming in with a tie for fifth (300).

Campbell senior Fredric Sundberg and sophomore Gregg Hostetter are in a tie at 51st, shooting a six-over 78 on the day.

Moot, a native of Johnstown, Pa., started his round with a 36 through the first nine holes, good for par, checking in with two-under 34 on the back nine for his team-leading 70 on the par-72, 6703-yard Keith Hills No. course.

Tuesday's final round will begin with a 9:30 a.m. shotgun start.
