Campbell's Simon Dunn Finishes 79th At NCAA East Regional
ROSWELL, GA. ? Simon Dunn of Campbell University finished in a tie for 79th place at the NCAA Division I Men's Golf East Regional after a final-round 78 on Saturday at Ansley Golf Club's Settingdown Creek. Dunn, a senior from Loughborough, England who was named the Atlantic Sun Conference Men's Golfer of the Year, finished the 54-hole tournament at 231 (72-81-78). He was tied for 12th place following an opening-round 72, but could not duplicate that performance over the final 36 holes. 'Simon was aware that this was his final collegiate round of golf and he was never really into the game today,' said head coach John Crooks. 'It was not a great tournament for him, but a great career. We'll miss him and wish him well.' Clemson and Georgia Tech tied for the team title at 12-over-par 876. North Carolina, Augusta State, Virginia Commonwealth, Georgia Southern, Auburn, Georgia, Florida and UAB rounded out the top 10 schools. Wake Forest finished one stroke behind Florida and UAB at 900 to miss an NCAA Championship berth. The top 10 teams, plus the top two individuals not on qualifying teams will advance to the NCAA Championship, May 29-June 1 at Columbus, Ohio.

BUIES CREEK, N.C. ? Simon Dunn of Campbell University has received an individual berth in the NCAA Division I Men's Golf East Regional that will be played May 16-18 at Roswell, Ga. The 2002 Atlantic Sun Conference Player of the Year, Dunn finished second in the A-Sun Championship. He earned one of six individual invitations to the event that will also host 27 teams. The top 10 teams and top two individuals not on a qualifying team will advance to the NCAA Championship, May 29-June 1 at Columbus, Ohio. The NCAA Central Regional at Little, Rock, Ark., and NCAA West Regional at Albuquerque, N.M., will also be held from May 16-18. Dunn has enjoyed an outstanding senior season, earning Atlantic Sun Men's Player of the Year and first-team all-conference honors in the process. TAVARES, FLA. ? Campbell University finished third in the Atlantic Sun Conference Men's Golf Championship on Wednesday at Deer Island Golf and Lake Club. Jacksonville State shot a three-over-par 291 to finish at four-under 860 in the 54-hole event, one stroke better than defending champion Georgia State (861). Campbell's 303 on Wednesday left the Camels in third place at three-over 867 in the 11-school event. CU led by five strokes entering the final 18 holes. Campbell senior Simon Dunn shot a one-over-par 73 on Wednesday and finished in second place behind Jacksonville State's Jose Campra, who shot 68 to finish at eight-under 208. Dunn, who carded rounds of 66 and 70 on Monday and Tuesday, respectively, finished the tournament at seven-under-par 209 and earned all-tournament honors. Sophomore Braxton Wynns shot 75 on Wednesday to finish in 10th place at even-par 216, while teammate Ulf Hedlund was 14th at two-over 218. James Huffam shot an even-par 71 in the final round and Campbell University tied for sixth place in the Long Beach State 49er Collegiate Classic men's golf tournament on Friday at the Zaharias Golf Club. Texas Christian won the event, firing a one-over-par 285 on Friday to finish the 54-hole tournament at nine-over 861. Toledo was second in the 17-team field at 873. Campbell tied for sixth with UC-Santa Barbara at 901. Toledo's Alan Murray won individual honors with a five-under-par 208 total, one stroke better than Texas Christian's Steve Shuert. Huffam was Campbell's top finisher, tied for 10th at eight-over-par 221, in the Fighting Camels' final event of the fall season.

Sophomore Braxton Wynns fired a team-low, even-par 72 to lead Campbell University in the first round of the Carolina First Intercollegiate men's golf tournament on Monday at the Country Club of South Carolina. As a team, the Fighting Camels shot a 15-over-par 303 and trailed leader UNC Wilmington by 19 strokes heading into Tuesday's final round. Coastal Carolina and Virginia Commonwealth finished the first round at even par 288 to tie for second place in the 15-team field. The tournament was scheduled for 54 holes of competition, but was reduced to 36 following heavy rain. East Carolina's Will Pope held the individual lead with a four-under-par 68, two-strokes ahead of Alex Larrazabal (Coastal Carolina), Matt Davidson (Furman) and Adam Gee (UNCW).
