White and Griffin spark Campbell in 94-66 win over North Carolina A&T

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Darren White scored a Gore Arena record 33 points and unbeaten Campbell pulled away from visiting North Carolina A&T Thursday night to claim a 94-66 victory.

A junior guard from Danville, Va., White scored 22 points in the second half alone on 9-of-11 shooting (including 4-of-5 threes).  His breakaway dunk ignited a 36-9 Camel burst that sent A&T (0-3) to its third-straight loss.

Campbell (3-0) led by as many as 29 down the stretch in its opening game of the Dale Howard Classic.  CU continues play in the event on Monday at Chicago State, before heading to co-hosts Iowa (Nov. 23) and Creighton (Nov. 25).

White and senior forward Eric Griffin combined for 57 points, 24 rebounds and nine blocked shots for the Camels, who shot 72 percent in the second half, while limiting A&T to just 23 percent shooting over the final 20 minutes.

The Camels finished with a 50-20 advantage on the boards and converted 18 offensive rebounds into a 30-10 edge in second-chance points.

White made 13-of-21 shots overall, 5-of-7 from 3-point range, pulled down 11 rebounds (7 offensive) and blocked four shots.  Griffin tallied 24 points on 9-of-12 shooting, plus 13 rebounds and tied his career high with five rejections.

Freshman guard Trey Freeman added 13 points and four assists, while Rico Ferguson and Amir Celestin dealt seven assists apiece for the Camels, who out-scored the Aggies 16-2 in transition.

Campbell shot 57 percent (36-63) as a team and made 8-of-17 three-pointers (.471), while converting 14-of-19 free throws (.737).

Campbell led by just one point when White's dunk in transition started the decisive spurt.  After leading by just one at the break (43-42), Campbell made 18 of its first 24 shots (.750) in the second period, including 4-of-5 threes.

Nic Simpson led North Carolina A&T with 17 points on 3-of-9 from 3-point distance and 8-of-8 from the line.  Jean Louisme added 10 points off the bench.  The Aggies hit just 34 percent (21-61) of their shots from the floor, but made 17-of-20 (.850) from the line.

Campbell rode a 14-3 run to a 19-9 advantage when Anthony Horton canned a three with 13:26 to play.  White's jumper put the Camels ahead 35-24 with 5:37 remaining in the period, but the Aggies closed the half on an 18-8 burst, capped by Jean Louisme's jump shot at the buzzer, to cut the gap to 43-42 at the break.

The Camels tied a team record for points scored in Gore Arena, which opened in 2008.  CU matched the 94-point output scored against UNC Asheville on Nov. 22, 2008.

A transfer from Midland (Texas) Junior College, White's 33-point effort eclipsed the 30 points scored by Jonathan Rodriguez against Chowan on Nov. 15, 2008 in the arena's inaugural game.  He also set a building record for field goals made (13).  White's 22-point second-half output tied Rodriguez' arena-record total that he scored in the second half against Mercer on Feb. 12, 2010.

The 33-point showing was the most by a Campbell player overall since Rodriguez scored 34 on Feb. 16, 2008 at Gardner-Webb.
