BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Marvelle Harris' lay-up with 2.4 seconds left lifted Campbell to a 62-60 exhibition men's basketball win over Wingate Thursday night at Gore Arena.
Wingate, which returned all five starters from last year's South Atlantic Conference runner-up squad, scored 30 points off 19 Campbell turnovers. Chase Smith led the Bulldogs with 13 points, while Ethan Kincaid added 12.
Campbell led 39-31 when Merthie hit a three with 14:35 to play, but the Division II Bulldogs answered with a 13-5 run and tied the score at 44 on Paidrick Matilus' jumper with 9:57 remaining.
Eddie Lewis' triple from the right side gave Wingate a 60-59 lead with 1:11 to play, but Amir Celestin hit the second of two free throws to knot the score with 50 seconds left.
On the following possession, Wingate's Jeff Parker was whistled for an illegal screen and the Camels held the ball for the last shot. Trey Freeman dribbled to the left elbow and fed Harris, who drove down the right blocks for the winning margin.
Wingate had one final opportunity, but Ethan Kincaid stepped out of bounds with 0.7 seconds to go.
Campbell shot 34.3 percent from the field overall, but hit 50 percent (12-24) in the second half. The Camels finished with a 42-29 edge on the boards.
Wingate made just 37.3 percent of its shots, but made more free throws (18-24) than the Camels attempted (9-15).
Campbell concludes its exhibition schedule Monday in a 7:00 p.m. start against Fayetteville State. The Camels open the regular season next Friday (Nov. 11) at home vs. Houston Baptist.
