Defense Wins Spring Game 52-37

BUIES CREEK, N.C.-The defense forced eight turnovers to take the annual Campbell Orange & White Spring Game 52-37, Saturday at Barker-Lane Stadium/Ed Gore Field.

Rising senior Steth Monroe picked up a pair of interceptions to go along with three tackles, while redshirt freshman Andrew Yost notched two sacks, plus a fumble forced and recovered to lead the white clad Camel defense, who broke a two year winning streak for the offense with the victory. The defense now leads the five year series 3-2.

The Orange squad took the early lead on its first possession of the game, as Josh Williams scampered in for a 26-yard score. After the defense trimmed the lead to 7-4 on back to back stops, the offense struck again as Kyle Clark punched in a four-yard touchdown run, making it 14-4.

The defense then registered eight unanswered, forcing a three and out on a Lucas Smith and Isaac Scott sack, followed by a Brandon Chandler interception.

Holding a 14-12 lead, Dakota Wolf found Jabri Ridenhour for a three-yard touchdown pass, making the score 21-12 after the Sam Eberwein extra point.

With the offense again threatening on the next possession, redshirt junior linebacker Michael Bolchoz ended the first quarter with a four-point forced fumble and recovery.

After an Eberwein 36-yard field goal, Yost forced another turnover for the White team, cutting the lead to 24-20. Justice Walker ended the following possession with another forced fumble, knotting the game at 24-all before Adam Lutz converted a 33-yard field goal for the offense.

With the offense piecing together a six play drive, redshirt sophomore Lucas Smith came away with the defense's second interception of the day, giving the White team its first lead of the day at 29-27. the defense tacked on another tally before the half, forcing a punt to take a 30-27 lead into the break.

After three rushers gathered 17 yards on five attempts, Wolf hit Jonathan Rogers for a 26-yard pickup, setting up a 13-yard strike on the ground for Ryan Davis.

The next play saw Steth Monroe pick off a tipped pass, converting five points for the defense. Three plays later, the White team's Shawn Sweeney, a defensive back from Albany, N.Y., registered another interception, giving the defense a 40-34 advantage.

Eberwein's second field goal of the day, a 29-yarder, recorded the final points for the offense, who surrendered 12-straight to end the game, including another Monroe interception in the final minute to cap off the game.

Senior signal caller Braden Smith and junior quarterback Dakota Wolf combined to go 20-for-35 for 229 yards, with Wolf adding a touchdown through the air. The pair also added 41 yards together on the ground.

Kyle Clark posted 50 yards rushing on nine attempts, while Josh Williams collected 45 yards on 10 carries. Ryan Davis tacked on five carries for 20 yards. All three registered rushing touchdowns on the day.

Jonathan Rogers paced the Camels' receivers with five catches for 81 yards, with Hunter Somerville hauling in two grabs for 51 yards. Redshirt junior Chad McMichael gathered 36 yards on four catches.

Andrew Yost and Michael Bulchoz paced the White team with six tackles each, while Brandon Stegall, Paul Pizzuti, Hassan Williamson, Isaac Scott and Lucas Smith all collected five stops.

In addition to the spring game, offseason awards were also handed out to several players.

Danny Dillon (Specialists), Will Sawyer (OL), Hunter Somerville (TE), Josh Williams (RB), Chad McMichael (WR), Braden Smith (QB), Lucas Smith (DL), Michael Rudisill (LB) and Steth Monroe (DB) took home strength and conditioning awards for their outstanding effort and progress in the weight room. 

Vincent Mantou (RB), Dakota Wolf (QB), Jabri Ridenhour (WR), Jacob Brewer (OL), Alex Green (TE), Lucas Smith (DL), Aaron Nichols (DB), Colten Burris (LB) and Danny Dillon (Specialists) were all named most improved at their positions.

Braden Smith, Dakota Wolf, Will Sawyer, Steth Monroe, Colten Burris and Lucas Smith were Champions Club honorees.

The Camels will open the 2012 season on Thursday, Aug. 30 at 7 p.m., hosting Shorter.
