Football Releases Spring Practice Schedule

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell's football team had a record setting 2011 season and starts the preparation for 2012 season this month as its spring schedule was released this morning (March 5). The team practices regularly on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays throughout the mid-point of March until the annual Orange-White Scrimmage on April 21. The team can host a total of 15 practice events throughout the spring

Campbell went 6-5 and placed 11 players on All-Pioneer Football League teams in 2011. The Camels' six wins overall and five wins in league play were both Division I era records. The Camels again led the PFL in rushing for the third straight season (210.45). CU's average rushing total placed the team 18th nationally. The team had four players (Carl Smith, C.J. Oates, Jordan Cramer, Braden Smith) ranked in the top 16 in rushing. The Camels set numerous modern era school records throughout the campaign including points in a game (76) and in a season (379). Three Campbell players earned national recognition for outstanding performances in the classroom with Kurt Odom, Michael Rudisill and Colten Burris being named CoSIDA First Team District 3 selections. The Camels also had five players earn Academic All-PFL Honors in Odom (first team – offense), Rudisill (first team – defense), Burris (first team – defense), Jordan Cramer (first team – offense) and Sam Eberwein (second team – special teams). Cramer earned individual national attention was one of only 58 student-athletes nationwide to secure a place on the FCS ADA Academic All-Star Team. The redshirt senior from Wake Forest, N.C. also set a new Campbell single game rushing mark with his 170 yards on the ground against Morehead State (11/5). He tied the school game record with his four rushing touchdowns against the Eagles. Cramer was strong contributor throughout the season in scoring a school-record 15 touchdowns (13 rushing, 2 receiving). His backfield mate, Carl Smith, set the school mark with his 677 yards rushing in 2011. Braden Smith set passing records in completions (179), attempts (313), yards passing (1,965) and touchdowns (14) in his first year with the program after transferring from SMU. Preston Dodson, who played four years of basketball at Campbell, established school-records for receptions (43), receiving yards (473) and touchdown receptions (5). Jeremiah Robinson led the defensive efforts for Campbell and completed his senior career with school-record 17.5 tackles for loss and 7.5 sacks.

The team practices regularly on Wednesdays and Fridays at 3:20 p.m. starting on March 12 through April 18. CU also hosts three Saturday scrimmages and one Saturday practice throughout the spring at Barker-Lane Stadium. All practices are open to the public to view and get a sneak peak of the 2012 team. The first Saturday full-contact scrimmage is on March 24 at 12 p.m. The Camels will also host Saturday scrimmages on March 31 and April 14 in preparation for the annual spring game on April 21.

All football weekly practices are at Barker-Lane Stadium (weather permitting). The Camels will also play all the team's scrimmage at Barker-Lane Stadium on Saturdays. Those interested are encouraged to contact the football office on the day of the practice to confirm practice times and locations.

On April 21, CU will host their annual organized uniformed scrimmage, the Orange-White game, starting at 12 p.m. at Barker-Lane Stadium. The game will be setup to mirror real game situations with 12-15 minute quarters and the offense and defense competing against each other in a pre-determined point system. Last season the Campbell offense defeated the defense 27-23 in the spring game for the second win in the now four years of the series.

Campbell University hosts the Earl Smith Golf Tournament on April 20, a day before the spring game, at Keith Hills Country Club with registration beginning at 9:30 a.m.

CU hosts the first Camel Youth Day from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on March 24 at the Campbell Football Fieldhouse.

The Camels will host the annual women's clinic on March 31. Further details about the clinic will be available at a later date.

"This spring will be something different because for the first time we've lost a large senior class," Coach Steele explained. "That means as a coaching staff we will need to go back and work more on the fundamentals and will not be able to progress as quickly through so areas as we have been able to do in the past when we have had an older football team. We will be going back to the basics during the spring and will spend quite a bit of time learning and getting things done the right way. With the graduations of so many seniors we are now a young football team. Even though a lot of these guys have earned playing time during their time here, they haven't had the full burden of having to play as many snaps as they are now going to have to play. So that is always a challenge. Every football team has a chemistry about them and that is something that we will need to work on this spring. It is a total different makeup then we have had here in the past. How we do things will not change though. The process will be the same, but it will be different in terms of how fast we are able to progress through the spring with this football team."
