BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell's football program (1-2, 0-1 PFL) looks to get back to the winning ways and travels to Des Moines, Iowa to take on Pioneer Football League rival Drake (3-1, 1-0 PFL) on Saturday, Oct. 1, for a 1 p.m. CDT at Drake Stadium/Johnny Bright Field.
Campbell fell to Jacksonville by a 57-21 score at home on Sept. 24. The game was closer than the final score indicated as Jacksonville scored the game's last 36 points in the final 25 minutes of game action. Preston Dodson led the offensive attack for CU with nine catches, 92 yards and a pair of touchdowns. His nine catches broke a Campbell record, while two touchdowns tied the CU mark set by Harrison Jordan in 2009. Braden Smith had a strong performance for the Camels with 20 completions for 189 yards. C.J. Oates carried 10 times for 85 yards, including a long run of 65 yards. The 65-yard carry was the longest of his career and the second longest in Campbell football history. Oates comes into the week ranking fourth in the conference in rushing with his average of 79.67 yards a contest. The redshirt senior is also third in the conference in scoring (8.00). Dodson is also ranked in the league in several categories. He is tied for fifth in scoring (6.00), seventh in receptions (5.67) and 13th in receiving yards (60.00). Ted Moore enters the contest second in the league with his average of 42.69 a punt. He was able to boot a 70 yard punt against Jacksonville. The punt was a career long and a new school record. Jeremiah Robinson is second in the conference in tackles for loss (1.83) and tied for ninth in sacks (0.67). Brandon Chandler has been dangerous with the ball in his hands and ranks second in the conference in both kickoff (25.00) and punt returns (11.2).
Drake is on a three-game winning streak after defeating Butler by a 24-14 score on Sept. 24. Drake's defense has been outstanding this season as the Bulldogs are allowing just 18.5 points a game and are also second in league in sacks (3.50) and total defense (328.25). Drake's Brandon Coleman was named the PFL's Defensive Player of the Week on Monday after recording 1.5 sacks and 2.5 tackles for loss against Butler. Coleman leads the PFL and is third nationally with six sacks. Senior linebacker Tyler Moorehead has also been impressive with 31 tackles, 5.5 stops for loss, an interception, a forced fumble and a blocked kick. Running back Patrick Cashmore leads the offensive attack with 264 yards rushing and three touchdowns. He has also hauled in eight passes for 108 yards and another score. Quarterback Mike Piatkowski has completed 88 passes for 1,040 yards and six touchdowns on the season. Chris Creighton, Drake's fourth-year head coach, has been nearly unbeatable at home since taking over the program with an impressive 16-3 mark. He and the team have won six consecutive games at home including the last four in conference play.
Campbell has never defeated Drake in three previous tries, but has continued to close the gap annually. Campbell fell last season to by a 14-12 score when the team's potential game-tying two-point conversion was overthrown in the final seconds. Daniel Polk completed 18 passes, ran for 48 yards and had a rushing touchdown in the game.
