Camels eliminate Buccaneers in Big South Tourney 6-2

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Hector Cedano went 8 2/3 while five  Camels posted two hit days to lead No. 3 Campbell to a 6-2 win over No. 7 Charleston Southern Thursday in Big South Championship action at the Winthrop Ballpark.

Campbell moves to 36-19 on the season, advancing to Friday's Big South Championship action, while Charleston Southern finishes 2014 30-26.

With the win, Campbell advances to play Friday at 3 p.m. against the loser of game seven, featuring No. 2 Winthrop and No. 6 Coastal Carolina, to be played at 4:30 p.m. today.

Cedano (7-0), a senior left-hander, went 8 1/3 scoreless, allowing his first baserunner with a one-out hit in the third. The Miami, Fla. native allowed two runs, both in the ninth, on eight hits with two strikeouts and two walks.

Ryan Thompson earned his 15th save, retiring the game's final batter with two outs in the ninth.

Andrew Tomasovich (7-3) was charged with the loss, allowing two runs, one earned, on eight hits with five strikeouts.

Austin Weekly tossed 1 2/3 in relief for the Buccaneers, allowing only one hit, while Will Hartsell bridged the gap, allowing four runs, one earned, on three hits with two strikeouts.

Facing a 6-0 deficit heading into the ninth, Charleston Southern threatened with a one-out triple from Alex Tomasovich. Chase Shelton followed with a two-run home run to right, making it 6-2. Two more base hits continued the rally before Thompson entered the game.

Matt Parrish and Clayton Brown both knocked in two runs, going 2-for-5 and 2-for-3, respectively. Elijah Trail homered and Steven Leonard scored two runs, going 2-for-3 in the win.

After leaving a pair stranded in the first and second, Campbell got its leadoff man on in the third with Steven Leonard taking a hit by pitch. The redshirt sophomore stole second and advanced to third on a CSU error, scoring on a Matt Parrish RBI groundout to put the Camels on the board.

With two away in the sixth after Charleston Southern turned a double play, Elijah Trail homered on a 2-2 pitch, sending the Andrew Tomasovich offering over the left field wall to make it 2-0 Camels.

The Camels added four more in the bottom of the seventh, piecing together four hits along with two Buccaneer errors to make the score 6-0. Parrish knocked a RBI single up the middle before Matt Nadolski scored on CSU's second error of the frame.

Clayton Brown followed two batters later with a two-run single, making the score 6-0.

Alex Tomasovich and Cody Austin both tallied two hits for the Buccaneers, while Shelton plated both CSU runs with his ninth inning home run.

Campbell fell to No. 6 Coastal Carolina 9-2 on Tuesday in the tournament opener for both teams.

The 2014 Big South Baseball Championship will continue tomorrow with two games, with the Championship game moved to Sunday, May 25 at 2:00 p.m.
