LYNCHBURG, VA. – Tied 3-3 with two out in the bottom of the seventh, Brent Graham scored the go-ahead run on a Radford miscue and Ryan Thompson closed out the Highlanders to give top-seeded Campbell the 4-3 late night win Wednesday at the Big South Championships.
24th-ranked Campbell improved to 48-9 overall with its 11th straight win, while Radford fell to 30-25 on the season.
The Camels move on to face the winner of Gardner-Webb and Longwood on Friday at 10 a.m. The GWU-Longwood contest is scheduled for Thursday at 3 p.m. at Liberty Baseball Stadium.
The game, delayed nearly two hours due to weather in the area, finished after 1 a.m. Thursday morning.
Two Campbell errors led to a RU run in the first with Josh Reavis coming home on Patrick Marshall's fielder's choice.
In the bottom of the fifth, Nick Ray put the Camels on the board and tied the game at one-all with his first home run of the year, crushing the solo shot deep over the right field wall.
The Highlanders took back the lead in the top of the sixth, with Chris Coia squeezing Ryan Burgess home to put RU up 2-1.
The Camels mounted a two-out rally in the sixth, when David Olson singled to right. Consecutive walks loaded the bases for CU before Will Albertson's 0-1 two-run single, plating Olson and Elijah Trail to put the Camels on top 3-2.
The Highlanders answered in the top of the seventh, posting four-straight singles with one away, tying the score at three apiece on Alexander Lee's RBI single to right.
In the bottom of the inning, Brent Graham doubled sharply to left with two outs. Facing a 1-0 count, Michael Felton's popup to shallow right was dropped, allowing Graham to score from second and give Campbell the 4-3 lead.
Thompson, who pitched the game's final three frames, retired six of seven in his final two innings, allowing just a two out double to Radford's Patrick Marshall.
Thompson, the 2013 Big South Pitcher of the Year, earned the win in relief to move to 9-0 on the season, allowing a run on five hits with three strikeouts.
Campbell starter Heath Bowers went six innings, allowing two runs, one earned, on five hits with four strikeouts and four walks.
Jeff Maxwell was charged with the loss, allowing an unearned run on two hits with two strikeouts and a walk in 2 1/3. Michael Boyle went 5 2/3, surrendering three runs on five hits with five strikeouts and two walks.
Ray went 2-for-3 with run and a RBI, including the homer, while Albertson scored twice in the CU win.
Marshall, Lee and Ryan Burgess were all 2-for-4 for the Highlanders.
RU will take on Liberty tomorrow in an elimination game, following the 3 p.m. GWU, Longwood contest.
