LYNCHBURG, VA. – Ryan Mattes' complete game shutout paced top-seeded Campbell in a 4-0 opening round win over No. 8 Charleston Southern Tuesday in the Big South Championships at the Liberty Baseball Stadium.
No. 24 Campbell improves to 47-9 overall with its 10th win in a row, while Charleston Southern dips to 22-33 on the season.
Mattes, a senior from Virginia Beach, Va., allowed six hits and struck out four without a walk, moving to 8-3 on the season. The complete game shutout was the first of the senior's career.
The Camels posted two runs in the second to strike first. Elijah Trail led off with a base hit and later scored on Will Albertson's RBI hit. The freshman then came around on Ben McQuown's two-out hit to make it 2-0 Campbell.
The Camels threatened again in the fourth, posting three straight base hits, but two were thrown out on the base paths to end the chance.
After a leadoff walk to McQuown in the fifth, the senior swiped his second stolen base of the game and scored on Felton's sacrifice fly to give CU the 3-0 lead.
Felton and Albertson both posted two hits and knocked in a run to lead the Camels. McQuown stole three bases in the game, extending his NCAA Division I total to 52.
CSU's Tory Schroff took the loss, falling to 6-5 on the year after allowing four runs on nine hits with three strikeouts and three walks in 5 2/3. Joe Pistacchio pitched 2 1/3 of scoreless ball, striking out three and walking one.
Robbie Streett posted two hits to lead the Buccaneers.
Campbell moves on to face the winner of No. 4 Radford and No. 5 Liberty tomorrow in the final game of the day. CSU will take on the loser of that game in an elimination game at 1 p.m.
The Big South Championships resume tomorrow at 9:30 a.m.
