BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Blake Boyce's game ending RBI double with two outs in the bottom of the ninth lifted Campbell past VMI 2-1 in the Big South series opener Friday afternoon at Jim Perry Stadium.
Campbell moves to 33-8 overall and 12-4 in Big South games with the win, while VMI falls to 18-23 and 5-8 in conference play. The series will continue tomorrow with a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
With one out in the bottom of the ninth, tied at 1-all, David Olson singled through the middle to put the winning run on base for the Camels. After a fly out to center, Boyce pulled the first pitch he saw into the gap in left center to score Colby Fox, who pinch ran for Olson, and win it for Campbell.
Ryan Thompson earned the win in the relief, moving to 4-0 on the season after pitching 2 2/3 with two hits and three strikeouts. Campbell starter Ryan Mattes allowed one unearned run on six hits with seven strikeouts and one walk in 6 1/3.
VMI's Connor Bach took the loss, falling to 2-3 on the year after giving up two runs, both earned, on six hits with a strikeout and two walks in a complete game effort.
Campbell's Brent Graham plated the first run of the game in the bottom of the fifth, scoring Boyce from third on a squeeze. The bunt single was Graham's team-best 10th of the season.
The Keydets knotted the game in the seventh when Brandon Angus scored on Drew Bryan's RBI groundout. Angus reached on a fielder's choice and made it to third after a stolen base and a CU error.
Olson and Graham both recorded two hits for the Camels in the win.
Rob Dickenson went 3-for-4 for VMI, while Red Dowdell picked up a pair of base hits.
The Camels will host North Carolina Central (April 23, 6:00 p.m.) and UNC Greensboro (April 24, 6:00 p.m.) next week at Jim Perry Stadium.
