BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Six Camels posted multiple hits and Ryan Mattes struck out seven for his sixth win to push No. 27 Campbell past Radford 11-3 Friday night at Jim Perry Stadium.
Campbell moves to 23-3 overall with its eighth straight win, and 6-1 in Big South games, while Radford dips to 12-11 on the season and 2-2 in conference games. The series will continue tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
Mattes, a senior righthander, moved to 6-1 on the season, fanning seven in seven innings with three runs on 10 hits and two walks. Coley Thompkins pitched two innings, allowing a pair of hits.
Tyler Costello (3-3) took the loss for Radford, allowing nine runs, seven earned, on eight hits in 2 1/3 innings of work. Dylan Nelson allowed two run on five hits with three strikeouts in 3 2/3. Mitchell MacKeith and Chase Lemaster pitched the final two stanzas for the Highlanders.
Blake Sipe went 3-for-4 for the Highlanders with a run scored, while Josh Gardiner, Josh Reavis and Jeff Kemp each grabbed two hits.
The Camels will take on North Carolina A&T (April 2, 6:00 p.m., Greensboro, N.C.) and Old Dominion (April 3, 6:00 p.m., Buies Creek, N.C.) in the midweek following the Radford series. Campbell returns to the road next weekend at Presbyterian, April 5-7.
