Campbell draws High Point in Big South tournament opening round, will play Tuesday evening
Charlotte, N.C. – Campbell is the #2 seed for next week's Big South Conference tournament and will face the #7 seed and host school High Point in the late game Tuesday evening. The CU/HPU game will begin following the Liberty/UNC Asheville game, which is slated to start at 4:30 p.m. The Fighting Camels (40-16) earned the second slot in the conference standings after finishing 15-9 in Big South regular season play.
High Point (26-29) tied Charleston Southern for seventh in the league standings at 11-13 and the Panthers earned the tiebreaker after taking the regular season series. Campbell did not play HPU in the regular season, and Tuesday's first round game will be the first meeting since the teams' split a regular season series in 2009.
CU is making its first postseason appearance since going 1-2 in the Atlantic Sun Conference tournament during the 2008 season. The Camels last played in a Big South tournament during the 1992 season. Michael Felton closed out the regular season leading the Big South in batting average (.431), on base percentage (.477), total bases (121) and base hits (100). The 100 base hits have tied the conference's single season record. Jimmy Brenneman leads the league in runs scored (65), walks (41), stolen bases (30) and hit by pitches (27).
Jake Kirkland leads the league in RBI (54) while Ben McQuown tops all hitters in sac bunts (20). On the mound, Matt Sergey is among the top-10 in opponents batting average (6th-.239), innings pitched (6th-88.2) and strikeouts (5th-73). Ryan Mattes is second in the Big South with ten saves, a new Campbell single season record.
