CHARLOTTE, N.C – Campbell junior second baseman Michael Felton (Tempe, Ariz.) has been named the Big South Conference's Choice Hotels Baseball Player of the Week, while Camels' reliever Ryan Mattes (Virginia Beach, Va.) has been named The Crons Brand Pitcher of the Week for games played May 7-13, it was announced today by the League office.
Felton batted .625 (15-for-24) with four runs scored, five RBI, two doubles and two stolen bases in helping the Camels to a 4-1 week, including a three-game sweep of second-place Radford. In the series against the Highlanders, Felton batted .714 (10-15) with two four-hit games. He opened his week with a 3-for-5 day and three RBI in Campbell's win at Wofford, and concluded his week breaking the Campbell single-season hits record. Felton also posted a .625 on-base percentage, .708 slugging percentage and did not strikeout in his 24 at-bats. In addition, he was perfect in the field with seven putouts and 11 assists.
Mattes recorded a save in all three Big South wins over Radford in a span of less than 24 hours to break the Campbell single-season saves record. He tossed two innings in Friday's opener, allowing just one hit while striking out three batters. In Saturday's first game of a twinbill, Mattes entered with two on and one out in the ninth inning and recorded the final two outs to preserve a 6-4 win. In game two, Mattes was called upon in the ninth inning again with one out and the bases loaded. He induced a chopper back to the mound which he fielded and tossed home for the forceout, then struck out the next batter to save Campbell's 1-0 victory.
