BUIES CREEK – Campbell (23-3, 3-0 Big South) will bring country's longest winning streak to Taylor Field on Friday when the Fighting Camels put the team's 18 consecutive wins on the line in a Big South Conference series with Charleston Southern. CU is coming off a three game sweep of Winthrop to open the conference slate this past weekend in Rock Hill, S.C. Charleston Southern (8-18, 1-2 Big South) opened the Big South portion of its schedule with one win over High Point last weekend, and the Buccaneers dropped a 3-2 midweek game to College of Charleston in the team's latest outing on Tuesday.
The Fighting Camels were named the Southeast Region "Team of the Week" by College Baseball Insider (http://www.collegebaseballinsider.com/TOW/TOW120327.html) after last week's 5-0 finish. Michael Felton's 48 base hits led the entire nation entering this week, and Jimmy Brenneman was second in the country with 35 runs scored. Campbell ranks second as a team in 3 categories with a collective .338 batting average, 306 base hits and 57 hit by pitches.
Campbell is receiving votes and recognition in multiple national polls this week, as the team is in the midst of the best start and longest winning streak in program history. After entering the "receiving votes" category in the USA Today/ESPN Coaches' poll on March 19 with two votes, Campbell jumped up to the 32nd spot with 18 votes this past week. The Camels are also listed in the NCBWA and College Baseball Daily mid-major polls.
The two teams have not played since 2009, a 9-7 Camel victory that gave Campbell a 23-21 lead in the overall series. During Campbell's final season in the Big South in 1994, the Camels took two of three games over Charleston Southern at Taylor Field in Buies Creek. Friday's opener will begin at 6 p.m. and fans can receive a free t-shirt as Campbell celebrates the Big South home opener. Saturday's doubleheader is scheduled to get underway at 2 p.m. Live video and live stats will be available for all three games through the links on the schedule page.
