Charlotte, N.C. – Campbell senior Matt Sergey (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) has been named The Crons Brand Pitcher of the Week for games played March 19-25, it was announced today by the League office.
Sergey pitched a complete game shutout in Friday's 8-0 Big South opening win at Winthrop. He scattered five hits (all singles) over his nine innings, striking out six while walking just one and holding the Eagles to a .161 batting average. He retired eight consecutive batters on two occasions and retired the side in the eighth inning after allowing two hits to lead off the frame. Sergey later struck out the final two hitters of the game as his 109-pitch effort was the first complete game of his career.
The right-hander has a perfect 3-0 record on the season and leads the Big South Conference with 41 strikeouts. His 38.2 innings pitched are tied for fifth-best in the league and Sergey holds a 2.79 ERA following his shutout performance.
Campbell (23-3, 3-0 Big South) entered the "receiving votes" category of two major national polls last week, earning two votes in the USA Today/ESPN Coaches' Poll. In this week's updated USA Today poll the Fighting Camels are now receiving 18 votes, placing them 32nd on the team charts for number of votes. The team's 18-game winning streak is the longest current streak in the nation. The Camels are also listed in the latest College Baseball Daily Mid-Major poll.
