Charlotte, N.C. - Jake Kirkland has been named the Choice Hotels Baseball Player of the Week by the Big South Conference for last week's games. He is the first Camel baseball player to be recognized for a weekly conference honor this season.
Kirkland batted .615 with a 1.154 slugging percentage to help the Camels to three victories last week. He opened his week with a solo home run in a 2-4 game at North Carolina State. Kirkland then went 6-9 on the weekend with seven RBI and four runs scored.
The Pauline, S.C. native was 5-6 with four runs scored and five RBI in a doubleheader sweep of North Carolina Central on Saturday, which included a home run and double in the nightcap. Kirkland then had two RBI, two walks and a stolen base on Sunday vs. Holy Cross to finish the week with a .688 on-base percentage.
In 11 games thus far in the 2012 season, Kirkland has a team-best .514 batting average, and he also leads the club in hits (19), triples (2), home runs (3), slugging percentage (.946), on base percentage (.620) and walks (11).
The outfielder has also maintained a perfect fielding percentage from his right field position, having tallied 31 putouts and one assist so far this season.
