BUIES CREEK – Michael Felton (Tempe, Ariz.) was three-for-five with three RBI and two runs scored to lead Campbell to a 9-4 victory over Holy Cross at Taylor Field on Sunday afternoon in the Campbell Invitational Tournament. The two teams will meet again in Monday's tournament finale, with first pitch slated for 4 p.m.
Each team scraped across one run in their respective half of the first inning. Holy Cross placed its first two batters on base with a single up the middle and a double down the right field line to start the game. Leadoff hitter Alex Maldonado then scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Josh Olson.
CU answered quickly, with Jimmy Brenneman getting the Camels started with a leadoff double. After advancing to third on a passed ball, Brenneman scored on a two-out, RBI single up the middle off the bat of Jake Kirkland. Kirkland finished the game with two RBI, pushing his team leading total to 14 in that category.
Holy Cross took advantage of three walks from Campbell starter Matt Sergey in the top of the second inning, scoring three runs off of two hits in the frame. Sergey settled down after the inning and allowed no hits over his final three innings of work. He left the game with a no decision after tossing five innings, allowing four hits and four runs (all earned).
The Camels again answered back with three runs of their on in the bottom of the second, aided by three walks from Holy Cross starter Nate Koneski. Felton drew Campbell even with his two RBI single to knot the game at 3-3. Koneski also left with a no decision and an identical line to Sergey, tossing five innings while surrendering four earned runs on four hits.
Neither team collected a hit from the third inning until the seventh inning. In the bottom of the seventh, Brenneman again led off with a single to get the frame underway. The senior from West Chester, Ohio finished the day two-four-three with four runs scored after drawing two walks. Ben McQuown (Waianae, Hawaii) and Felton then both reached on bunt attempts to load the bases with nobody out.
Kirkland walked to bring one run in, and after a pitching change, David Olson (Auburn, Wash.) hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score McQuown. After Blake Boyce (Virginia Beach, Va.) was hit by a pitch, Kyle Holmstrom (Livermore, Calif.) walked to bring in CU's third run of the inning and giving Campbell a 7-4 advantage. Campbell then pushed across two additional insurance runs in the eighth inning.
Logan Self (2-1) pitched four innings in relief to pick up the win, scattering three hits and striking out the side in the eighth inning. Nate Walker (0-2) took the loss for Holy Cross after allowing two hits and three runs (one earned) in one inning of work.
Campbell improves to 8-3 on the season, while Holy Cross drops to 2-3. The Crusaders defeated N.C. Central 7-1 earlier in the day. CU and Holy Cross will meet again on Monday afternoon for the finale of the Campbell Invitational Tournament.
