Baseball alters weekend schedule, hosts NC Central and Holy Cross in Campbell Invitational Tournament

BUIES CREEK - Campbell (5-3) will play host to NC Central and Holy Cross this weekend in the Campbell Invitational Tournament. NCCU is 1-7 this season while Holy Cross is 1-2 after a season opening three-game series at Texas A&M last weekend.

Campbell will now play NC Central in a doubleheader Friday beginning at 3 p.m. The two clubs will play a nine-inning game followed by a seven-inning nightcap. The two games originally scheduled for Saturday will be postponed to Sunday because of rain forecasted for all day Saturday. NC Central will now face Holy Cross at 12 noon on Sunday, followed Campbell vs. Holy Cross at 3:30 p.m. Monday's game against Holy Cross will be played as scheduled at 4 p.m.

NC Central (1-7) most recently hosted Eastern Michigan on Wednesday, falling 8-4. The Eagles also dropped a home game to Duke, losing 17-3. The team's win came over New Jersey Institute of Technology in the opening game of a three-game series. Luis Diaz leads the Eagle offense, batting .393 with three home runs on the season. Sam Fuller is 1-0 in four relief appearances for the NCCU pitching staff, allowing just seven hits and one earned run in eight innings of work.

Holy Cross fell to A&M by scores of 3-2 (11 innings) and 8-2 during the team's opening weekend, beating the Aggies 7-3 (10 innings) in the middle game of the series. Chris Sintetos was two-for-three with two runs and three RBI against Texas A&M. Evan Ocello is batting .455 in eleven at-bats with a .636 slugging percentage. Andrew Boyce leads the Holy Cross pitching staff with 5.1 innings pitched, allowing three hits and one earned run.

Campbell is scheduled to play NC Central and Holy Cross each in two games in Buies Creek before traveling to North Carolina A&T on Tuesday afternoon. Jake Kirkland is batting .464 though eight games during his first year in Buies Creek after hitting his second homer of the season in Tuesday's game at NC State. He leads the Camels in base hits (13), triples (2), home runs (2), total bases (25), walks (8), slugging percentage (.893) and on base percentage (.579).

Paul Eyster pitched seven innings of four-hit, shutout baseball in last Sunday's 9-0 win over Fordham. The left-handed pitcher from Selinsgrove, Pa. now leads the team in ERA (0.87), opponents' batting average (.209) and is tied for the team-lead with eleven strikeouts.

Sunday, March 4: NC Central vs. Holy Cross, 12 p.m., Holy Cross vs. Campbell, 3:30 p.m.
Monday, March 5: Campbell vs. Holy Cross, 4 p.m. (originally scheduled)
