Baseball Summer Update: August 1
BUIES CREEK, N.C.-Summer collegiate baseball is in full swing across the country, and five Camels are honing their skills in four leagues.
Jimmy Brenneman (Hamilton Joes / Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League) – Brenneman led Hamilton to a 15-5 mark in its last 20 games, locking up the No. 2 seed in the GLSCL South Division Playoffs. The Joes are slated to take on the No. 3 Xenia Scouts on Tuesday, Aug. 2, with the winner advancing to play Southern Ohio, who won the South Division title. Brenneman batted .323 through the end of the regular season, good for 10th in the league. The rising Campbell senior also led the league in runs (35), while ranking second in triples (3), second in walks (27), second in stolen bases (17), third in on-base percentage (.460), third in times hit by pitch (9) and 15th in hits (41). The Joes were 24-18 during the regular season.
Erick Gaylord (Watertown Wizards / Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League) – Gaylord continues to have a standout summer, competing for the PGCL triple crown. The rising Campbell senior is leading the league in home runs (10) and RBIs (41), while ranking third in batting average (.358). Gaylord also leads the league in runs scored (36) and total bases (94), and stands second in stolen bases (19). Watertown is 17-26 this summer and wraps up the regular season on Aug. 3, hosting Newark.
Matt Marksberry (Hamilton Joes / Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League) – Marksberry and the Joes qualified for the GLSCL playoffs as the runner-up in the South Division and will play the No. 3 seed Xenia Scouts on Tuesday, Aug. 2 with winner advancing to play Southern Ohio, who won the South Division. The Joes closed out the regular season on a 15-5 streak, finishing 24-18 overall. The rising Campbell sophomore tossed a gem in his last outing, picking up a win over the Cincinnati Steam. Marksberry tossed 5 1/3 shutout innings, allowing five hits with three strikeouts and no walks. The Batavia, Ohio native is 2-3 on the season with a 3.49 ERA and one save.
Ryan Mattes (Peninsula Pilots / Coastal Plain League) – Mattes fashioned a 2.00 ERA in four appearances with a 1-0 record for the Pilots. The rising junior fanned eight and walked only one in nine innings.
Jake Smith (St. Cloud River Bats / Northwoods League) – Smith was charged with a loss in his last appearance, a July 31 start, allowing three runs on three hits with a strikeout and two walks against the Rochester Honkers. The rising Campbell senior is 2-4 over the summer in nine games that include seven starts, adding a 5.51 ERA and one save. The North Augusta, S.C. native has fanned 19 in 32 2/3 innings of work for the 28-29 River Bats.
