Baseball Summer Update: July 25

BUIES CREEK, N.C.-Summer collegiate baseball is in full swing across the country, and five Camels are honing their skills in four leagues.

Jimmy Brenneman (Hamilton Joes / Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League) – Brenneman is 3-for-20 at the plate since making the GLSCL All-Star game, but still stands 20th in batting (.308) in the league. The rising Campbell senior also stands third in runs (27), tied for second in walks (21), tied for third in times hit by pitch (7), tied for fourth in stolen bases (12) and fourth in on-base percentage (.449). Brenneman hit safely in 20 of 21 games leading up to the all-star game. Hamilton is 19-16 overall on the season and 3-3 since the break. In a July 21 win at Lexington, Brenneman was 0-for-3, but walked twice and scored a pair of runs in a 17-7 victory for the Joes.

Erick Gaylord (Watertown Wizards / Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League) – Gaylord is in contention for the PGCL's triple crown, leading the league with 38 RBIs and 10 home runs while hitting .372, which ranks second overall behind Bryan Aanderud's (Cooperstown Hawkeyes / Cypress College) .380 average. Gaylord also leads the league in total bases (88) while tying for lead in stolen bases (18), tying for second in runs scored (32) and tying for third in hits (48). On the strength of his four home run game which garnered national attention, the rising Campbell senior was named PGCBL Player of the Week. Gaylord also hit a two-run homer in the PGCBL All-Star game and was named Perfect Game USA's "Spotlight Player" in its July 19 Summer Roundup. Gaylord was also featured in the July 21 edition. Watertown is 15-23 on the season.

Matt Marksberry (Hamilton Joes / Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League) –
Marksberry owns a 1-3 record with a 4.43 ERA in six appearances this season with the Hamilton Joes. The Batavia, Ohio native has fanned 18 batters in 22 1/3 innings while surrendering 15 hits. Marksberry came on in relief at Southern Ohio last week, walking one and fanning three. The Joes are 19-16 on the season.

Ryan Mattes (Peninsula Pilots / Coastal Plain League) – Mattes has fashioned a 2.00 ERA in four appearances with a 1-0 record after picking up a win in his last appearance. The rising junior has fanned eight and walked only one in nine innings for the 18-13 Pilots.

Jake Smith (St. Cloud River Bats / Northwoods League) – Smith was charged with a loss in his last appearance, a July 12 start, allowing seven runs on six hits with three strikeouts and a walk against the Rochester Honkers. The rising Campbell senior is 2-2 over the summer in seven games that include five starts, adding a 3.99 ERA and one save. The North Augusta, S.C. native has fanned 18 in 29 1/3 innings of work for the 22-26 River Bats.
