Men's tennis wins 6-1 over Gardner-Webb in conference opener

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Men's tennis picks up the 6-1 win over conference opponent Gardner-Webb on Saturday at the James R. Nisbet Tennis Center. The Camels improve to 2-5, 1-0 Big South heading into Monday's match at North Carolina at 3 p.m while Gardner-Webb falls to 2-7, 0-2 BSC.

Campbell secured the doubles point after winning the No. 1 and 3 doubles matches. Lukas Schaefer and Jonathan O'Neal downed Nikita Zvorkov and Yaroslav Prostakov 6-2 at the doubles No. 1 position. Lorenz Schwab and Nicolas Rakitin defeated Ben Kaszas and Max Scholl 7-6 after winning the tiebreaker 7-2.

Jonathan Walker and Paul Hogan won the doubles No. 2 match after beating Dustin Werner and Gerard Sola 7-6 with a tiebreaker score of 7-5.

The Fighting Camels claimed all but one singles match going on to win their conference opener 6-1 over the Runnin' Bulldogs.

Schaefer took the No. 1 singles match with a 7-5, 6-3 two-set win over Scholl. He moves to 4-3 in singles on the season and 3-3 at the No. 1 spot. Schwab also earned his fourth individual dual win as he knocked down Zverkov 6-2, 6-3 at No. 2. He is 4-3 over and 4-2 when playing at the No. 2 spot.

Sola picked up his fifth individual win going three sets against Kaszas. The Camel fell 7-6 (8-6) in the first set but came back in the following two winning the No. 3 match 6-7 (6-8), 7-5, 7-6 (11-9).

Rakitin defeated Hogan in the No. 4 match in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4. He is 2-0 when playing at No. 4 and improves to 5-2 in singles competition.

Werner was the last Camel to pick up a singles win on the day overcoming Walker 6-3, 6-1. Werner is 2-0 when playing at No. 6 and is now 3-4 on the season in singles.

Gardner-Webb's lone point came at the No. 5 match-up as Prostakov defeated O'Neal 6-2, 6-3.

The Fighting Camels return to the court on Monday, Fab. 29, as they travel to Chapel Hill, N.C. for a 3 p.m. match-up against the Tar Heels of North Carolina.
