BUIES CREEK, N.C.-Campbell University has named Jackie Knight its head athletic trainer, while Greg Tompkins was promoted to director of ticketing, Director of Athletics Bob Roller announced today.
"These are two very deserving promotions,” said Roller. “Jackie has more than proven herself during this year as interim head athletic trainer. She has guided a talented staff of athletic trainers through a busy year with 20 NCAA Division I sports. Greg has been a tremendous addition to our athletic ticketing office, adding a much-needed personal touch to the Camel fans who support our teams. He has brought many innovative ideas to the table as we look to increase our attendance for the 2012-13 seasons."
Serving as the interim head athletic trainer over the past year, Knight will begin her seventh year overall at Campbell University in 2012-13.
“I’d like to thank Athletic Director Bob Roller for entrusting me with this incredible opportunity,” said Knight. “I have made a commitment to the athletes and coaches at Campbell University over the past six seasons and I am very happy that I will continue doing so for years to come. The support of the coaches and my amazing staff has made the transition to head athletic trainer a seamless one and I have no doubt that we will move forward together to help the athletic teams excel.”
Knight headed all athletic training needs for Campbell’s football team in 2011-12 while handling the entire department’s daily operations, and will continue to do so under her new title.
Knight had been the athletic trainer for the women’s basketball, men’s and women’s tennis and men’s and women’s golf teams prior to being promoted in the summer of 2011. She also works as the Clinical Coordinator of the Athletic Training Education Program and teaches classes within that program.
Prior to Campbell, Knight worked as the head athletic trainer and assistant professor in the Health and Physical Education Department at Hillsdale College in Hillsdale, Mich. for three years. While at Hillsdale College with a staff of only two Certified Athletic Trainers, Knight worked primarily with the football, men’s basketball, and softball teams but covered all the other sports regularly.
While receiving her master’s degree in athletic training from Indiana State University, Knight was a graduate assistant in the Sycamores athletic training department. During her stint at Indiana State, Knight also served as an athletic trainer at Terre Haute North Vigo High School.
Knight got her bachelor’s degree in athletic training from Olivet College in Olivet, Mich. As an undergrad at Olivet, Knight served as the football equipment manager and student athletic trainer while participating as a student-athlete on the softball and basketball teams. She also had the opportunity to be one of the athletic trainers for the Michigan Cadet National Wrestling Camp during the summer.
In the summertime for the past several years, Jackie has worked with USA Athletes International and has had the opportunity to play softball in international competitions and travel around the world. More recently, she has transitioned to coaching softball teams as well as serving as the athletic trainer. In the summer of 2008, Jackie coached a team that won the gold medal while competing in Sydney, Australia at the Olympic Softball Stadium, the site of the 2000 Summer Olympics.
Knight is a member of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association, Great Lakes Athletic Trainers’ Association, Michigan Athletic Trainer’s Society, Mid-Atlantic Athletic Trainers Association, and is an American Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED instructor.
Tompkins, meanwhile, is responsible for managing all aspects of sales and game day ticket operations for Campbell’s seven ticketed sports, as well as managing the purchase of all apparel and equipment for Campbell’s 21 varsity sports.
“It is an honor to join the Campbell Athletics staff in a full-time capacity,” said Tompkins. “I would like to thank Mr. Roller and Hannah Bazemore for their confidence and trust in me to take on this new position at Campbell. I share in their vision of making this program everything that our University and our student-athletes deserve.”
Tompkins came to Campbell in 2010, serving first as a Graduate Assistant in the compliance department before moving to the ticket office in August 2011.
The Raleigh native graduated from Clemson University, where he was a walk-on in football, and will earn his MBA in June 2012 from Campbell’s Lundy-Fetterman School of Business.
Before coming to Campbell, Tompkins served as a volunteer in football operations at Western Carolina University where he assisted the recruiting coordinator. During that time, he also worked at numerous tournaments for the Southern Conference. Tompkins also served two years as Vice President of Clemson’s Raleigh area alumni association.
Tompkins and his wife Effie have an 8-month-old daughter, Tillman.
