Football Off To Iowa To Take On Drake This Weekend

BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Campbell's football team (2-6, 1-4 Pioneer Football League) looks to keep the winning ways going and takes to the road to take on Drake (7-1, 5-0 PFL) in Des Moines, Iowa on Saturday, Nov. 7 at 2 p.m. EST.

Last time out, Oct. 31, the Camels fell behind by a 14-3 margin to Morehead State in the first quarter but fought back to get to within a point at the break on the 44-yard field goal from redshirt sophomore kicker Adam Willets. Willets kept the momentum going and gave Campbell its first-ever second half Pioneer Football League lead in the third quarter, 16-14. Later in the game with Campbell clinging to a three point advantage, sophomore Cody Lyon came through with the biggest play of the afternoon when he intercepted a Morehead State attempt and returned it 45 yards for the score to secure the 31-22 victory. For both their efforts Willets and Lyon were honored by the Pioneer Football League this week. Willets took home his second consecutive Pioneer Football League Special Teams Award after scoring 11 points and making three field goals. On the year, Willets has made eight field goals. Lyon earned his first-ever PFL Defensive Player of the Week honor after picking off a pair of passes and returning one for a touchdown against the Eagles. Lyon also was second on the team with nine stops. The Camels did the almost unthinkable in the game and ran for 208 yards against a team that was leading the country in rush defense (63.6). CU has now top the 200-yard mark in rushing four times on the season.

CU will bring a talented offense to the contest and currently lead the PFL and rank 13th nationally in rushing (191.38 yards per game). The Camels are also the third-best offensive yardage team in the league and 45th nationally at 349.88 yards per contest. Campbell's scoring offense of 22.13 points a game is fifth in the Pioneer Football League. The Camels have four players that among the top-12 in the PFL in rushing. Redshirt junior quarterback Daniel Polk is the seventh leading rusher in the conference with an average of 49.88 yards a game. Redshirt sophomore C.J. Oates is ninth in rushing with his 46.62 average. Sophomore Rashaun Brown is 11th at 42.29 and redshirt sophomore Carl Smith is 12th at 40.75. Smith became the third different Campbell runner to top 100 yards against Morehead State last week. Smith 124 yards rushing a personal best and a team season high. Polk is all over the league leader board and is sixth in total offense (177.25) and seventh passing efficiency (107.90). He is tied for 18th in scoring (3.25). Redshirt sophomore receiver Harrison Jordan is seventh in receiving yards a contest (43.75) and tied for 19th in scoring (3.0). The Camels remain one of the more difficult teams to sack in the league and are only giving up a 1.13 sacks a game, which is second in the PFL. The CU defense also has had its outstanding moments and are the sixth-best pass defense in the league (177.38) and 37th nationally. Individually, redshirt sophomore Christian Dixon and Lyon each have three interceptions. The three interceptions place the duo tied for second in the league in interceptions per game (00.38). CU also sports three players that are among the top tacklers in the PFL in redshirt junior Lee Stanley (7th), redshirt sophomore Milton Brown (11th) and Lyon (t-14th). Willets is second in the league in field goals (1.00 per game) and seventh in scoring (3.86 pts per game).

Drake arrives at the game on a five-game winning streak and sits atop the Pioneer Football League leader board with a perfect 5-0 mark in conference play. The Bulldogs won a thrilling 45-38 game over Jacksonville over the weekend. Redshirt freshman quarterback Mike Piatkowski leads the Drake passing attack with 1,684 yards and 10 touchdowns. Senior running back Steve Platek leads the team with 37 catches, 476 yards and three touchdowns. Platek has also run for six touchdowns and is second on the team in scoring behind kicker Brandon Wubs. Wubs leads the conference with 59 points on 12 field goals and 23 extra points. Junior running back Tom Kostek paces the ground attack with 312 yards and an average of 4.6 yards carry. Senior linebacker Cale Hunt leads the squad with 62 tackles and four pass defended. Senior defensive end Dain Taylor has a league-best 13.5 tackles for loss. He also leads the team and ranks third in the conference with 7.5 sacks. Senior linebacker Josh Walkup has also been impressive with 5.5 sacks.

Campbell plays its final road game of the season and travels to Valparaiso, Ind. by way of Chicago to take on Valparaiso on Saturday, Nov. 14 at 2 p.m. EST.
