BUIES CREEK, N.C.-- Campbell University honored its 2009 softball program with the presentation of their championship rings on Saturday, Oct. 31, at halftime of the Campbell-Morehead State football game at Barker-Lane Stadium/Ed Gore Field.
The rings were presented to 17 players, two coaches and the student-manager that helped make the 2009 season so memorable. Two of the current and former Camels, Karlie Love and Amanda Littlejohn, were unable to attend the event. Love was represented by her father, Thom. Littlejohn was sent her ring in California earlier, but was on the minds of her teammates and coaches as she battles in her most recent bout with cancer. Littlejohn's teammates and coaches wore a special t-shirt at the ceremony with her name on the back and the saying "Play For A Cure" on the front.
The Fighting Campbell softball program had an outstanding season with a 38-16 record. The team won both the regular season title and the conference title and set school records in the home runs (81), slugging percentage (.508) and on-base percentage (.383). The team also tied the school's field percentage mark (.966)
The Camels, after running through the conference tournament unblemished for the second consecutive season, made the NCAA Tournament for the second time in as many years.
Individually, Brittany Stanley was named the Atlantic Sun's Pitcher of the Year and the Tournament MVP. The tournament MVP was the second time the honor had been bestowed on her. The Camels also had seven players that were named to Atlantic Sun Conference teams in Stanley, Karlie Love, Robin Leathers, Amanda Miller, Hilary Wheatley, Taylor McGee and Christina Melton. CU also had three make the Atlantic Sun's All-Tournament Team in McGee, Stanley and Wheatley.
The Camels also stood out in the classroom with a school-record 15 A-Sun Academic All-Conference Selections (Melissa Elks, Lizzie Goldbach, Ashton Hardison, Brittani Hubbard, Ashley Jones, Robin Leathers, Amanda Littlejohn, Karlie Love, Keeli Michael, Lauren Rodriguez, Lauren Stephan, Cassie Webb, Hilary Wheatley and Katie Woodcock). Love also garnered nationally academic attention and was named to the ESPN The Magazine / Academic All-America Second Team by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Woodcock also gather some national attention and tied for the lead in the country in saves with six.
Head coach Drew Peterson also reached a few milestones during the 2009 season. He set a new Campbell softball career victory mark (268) and took home his Atlantic Sun Coach of the Year honors for the second time in his career.
The two-time defending Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament Champion Camels will open the spring schedule on February 11, 2010 with a home doubleheader against UNC-Wilmington starting at 4 p.m. CU is looking for their third consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament after sweeping both the regular season and conference tournament titles in the A-Sun last season and winning the conference tournament title in 2008.
