JACKSONVILLE, FLA. – After trailing 1-0 at halftime, Campbell rallied to defeat North Florida 2-1 on Saturday Afternoon. The win improves the Camels to 4-7-3 on the season and 3-4-1 in league play. The Lady Ospreys fell to 6-9-1 for the year and 3-4-0 in conference action.
The Lady Ospreys were the first to strike on the afternoon when Katelin Swift scored her league leading tenth goal of the season in the 40th minute. Senior Elizabeth Gowan streaked down the left side before delivering the ball to Swift who headed it into the right corner of the goal.
After only recording three shots in the first half, the Camels came out on the attack in the second half looking to knot the game at 1. Campbell turned up the pressure and intensity in the second half and their efforts began to pay dividends.
In the 65th minute Hanna Salmen almost tied the game as her shot rang off the crossbar. Just five minute later Salmen netted the equalizer as she lofted her 10 yard shot just over goalkeeper Erica Lippitt’s hands to tie the game at 1-1.
After neither team could break the deadlock in the first 90 minutes, the two teams settled in for sudden death overtime. Just under three minutes into bonus time, Hanna Salmen delivered Campbell’s first corner kick of the afternoon into the 18 yard box. After the ball bounced around in the box, Sarah Durham collected the ball and buried it into the goal to give the Camels a 2-1 victory.
The Camels will return to the pitch on Wednesday as they host Kennesaw State in a battle of A-Sun opponents. The match is scheduled to kickoff at 7 p.m. at the Eakes Athletic Complex. The night will be extra special as the game marks the “Kick Out Cancer” promotion which is designed to help in the fight against breast cancer.
