BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Two teams looking for a win square off Thursday when Campbell (12-9, 7-5 A-Sun) travels to Stetson (5-16, 3-10) for a 6:30 p.m. tip-off at the Edmunds Center. Campbell has lost its last 3 games to drop from first to fourth place in the Atlantic Sun Conference standings. Stetson has lost 4 in a row and is in last place in the league table.
Since defeating the Hatters 81-55 on Jan. 16 in Buies Creek, the Camels have lost 4 of 5 games, including a heart-breaking 60-59 setback Monday against Lipscomb when Josh Slater hit a 3-pointer with 0.2 seconds to play.
Four Camels hit double digits against Stetson last month and CU held the Hatters to 38 percent shooting, while scoring 23 points off 16 SU turnovers. After falling to the Camels, Stetson defeated Mercer 76-69 before starting its 4-game slide.
Campbell stands 3-3 in A-Sun road games this year with wins at USC Upstate, Kennesaw State and Lipscomb. Stetson is 4-4 at home, 2-3 vs. league schools at the Edmunds Center.
The Camels are looking to halt an 8-game slide on the road against the Hatters. The last time Campbell won at the Edmunds Center was a 67-61 decision on Feb. 19, 2000.
Campbell ranks 5th in the nation in steals (10.71) and 11th in turnover margin (+4.33).
Jonathan Rodriguez is just the 2nd player in the Atlantic Sun Conference and the 101st in NCAA Division I history to compile 2000 points and 1000 rebounds in his career. He enters Thursday's game with 2001 points and 1003 rebounds in 112 career games.
Junard Hartley tops the A-Sun in assists (5.81) and steals (2.38) and ranks 21st nationally in both categories.
Five Camels played high school basketball in the State of Florida -- Amir Celestin (Miami / Norland), Lorne Merthie (Sanford / Winter Springs), Jonathan Rodriguez (Miami / Calusa Prep), Miles Taylor (Pensacola / Woodham) and Kyle Vejraska (Alachua / Santa Fe). Celestin, Merthie, Rodriguez and Vejraska earned all-state honors, while Celestin and Rodriguez led their high schools to state championships.
Stetson attempts 41 percent of its shots behind the 3-point arc. A.J. Smith (36-110), Brandon Williams (29-89) and Mark Lohuis (26-81) hae all attempted more than 80 shots from long range this year. A pre-season all-league pick, Smith ranks 9th among A-Sun scoring leaders (14.8).
After winning just once in a 9-game stretch against the Hatters, Campbell has now won 3 of the last 5 meetings between the schools.
CU has won 7 of 14 all-time games vs. Stetson in Buies Creek, but has lost 8-straight on the road to the Hatters.
On Jan. 16 at Gore Arena. Jonathan Rodriguez (17) led 4 Camels in double figures and CU defeated the Hatters 81-55. Lorne Merthie (16), Preston Dodson (14) and William Kossangue (12) also hit double digits for CU, which shot 52% from the floor and made 9-14 threes (.643).
Stetson's non-conference schedule included losses to power conference members Florida (46-74), Florida State (38-80), Louisville (48-80) and Miami (49-69).
Stetson ranks 11th (last) in the A-Sun in scoring margin (-13.5), field goal percentage (.382), free throw percentage (.613), 3-point FG% (.295), field goal percentage defense (.486), rebounding margin (-7.7) and assist-turnover ratio (0.71).
Hatter forward Ridge Graham rates 4th among A-Sun freshman scoring leaders (11.3), 20th overall, and is 13th in rebounding (5.8).
The Camels continue their two-game road swing Saturday at Florida Gulf Coast (5:15 p.m.).
