BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Campbell puts a six-game home court win streak and first place in the Atlantic Sun Conference standings on the line Saturday when Belmont visits Gore Arena for a 3:15 p.m. tip-off.
Despite playing 6 of its first 10 A-Sun games on the road, the Camels (12-7, 7-3) completed the first half of the league schedule tied with ETSU and Jacksonville atop the standings board.
Campbell stands 8-1 at home this year, the lone loss coming to ACC member Virginia Tech (71-60) on Nov. 23. CU owns an 18-5 record at the Pope Center/Gore Arena, including last year's 10-4 mark.
Belmont (11-10, 6-5) is coming off a 78-72 loss to arch rival Lipscomb on Tuesday. The Bruins defeated the Camels (66-55) and ETSU (100-89) last weekend at Nashville.
Campbell is coming off a 72-57 loss Wednesday at East Tennessee State. CU cut an 18-.point deficit to just 4 with 4:00 remaining, but the Bucs knocked down 3-straight 3s to close out the win.
Last week at Nashville, Keaton Belcher hit 5-6 threes and scored 17 points, while Mick Hedgepeth added 12 points and 12 boards for the Bruins. Jonathan Rodriguez (15) and Miles Taylor (14) led the Camel offense.
Campbell ranks 6th in the nation in steals (10.89) and 15th in turnover margin (+4.32).
Jonathan Rodriguez broke the school's all-time scoring record last week and now stands just 14 points and 14 rebounds shy of becoming only the 101st player in NCAA Division I history to compile 2000 points and 1000 rebounds in his career.
Miles Taylor had 14 points in Saturday's win at Lipscomb. Each of his 6 double-figure scoring outings this year has come on the road, where he averages 11 points per game.
Junard Hartley missed a triple-double by just 3 rebounds last Saturday (11 pts., 12 assists, 7 boards) in CU's 86-82 win at Lipscomb and continues to lead the A-Sun in assists (5.79), and steals (2.42). He ranks 12th in the nation in assists and 19th in steals.
Campbell enters this weekend's action in 1st place in the A-Sun standings at the latest time in a season since joining the league in 1994-95.
Belmont leads the Atlantic Sun Conference in defensive field goal percentage (.410). Last Thursday, the Bruins limited Campbell to 37.5 percent shooting from the floor. Freshman Ian Clark tops the Bruins and ranks 10th among A-Sun scoring leaders (14.1).
Due to the quirks of the A-Sun regular season schedule, Campbell and Belmont play twice in a nine-day span (Jan. 21-30). Conversely, Campbell opened A-Sun play Nov. 27 against North Florida and closes its league season at UNF on Feb. 27.
Belmont's starting lineup routinely changes throughout the season based on practice performance and matchups. Ten different Bruins have started games this year. Only freshman Ian Clark (who leads the team in scoring at 14.1 points per game) has started all 21 contests.
Last year, the Bruins rated third in the nation in 3-point field goals made per contest (10.2), but with the graduation losses of Matthew Dotson and Andy Wicke, Belmont's 3-point production has fallen to 7.62 per outing this year and a 33.5 team percentage beyond the arc. However, the Bruins canned a season-best 14 threes in their 100-89 win over ETSU, then dropped 12 triples on Lipscomb in Tuesday night's 78-72 loss.
Last week at Nashville, Belmont closed the game on a 10-2 run and claimed a 66-55 victory over the Camels. Keaton Belcher hit 5-6 threes and finished with 17 points. Mick Hedgepeth added 12 (10-14 free throws) and 12 boards for the Bruins who finished with a 43-28 edge on the glass and had 18 second-chance points. Jonathan Rodriguez led Campbell with 15 points, while Miles Taylor contributed 14.
Following Saturday's game, the Camels host Lipscomb Monday (8:00 p.m.).
