BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell University is one of 14 schools, plus five individual competitors headed to the NCAA Regional men’s golf championship at Red Tail Golf Club, May 14-16 at Sorrento, Fla.
The Fighting Camels, who won last month’s Atlantic Sun Conference Championship on their home course, Keith Hills Country Club, will compete for the five berths in the NCAA Championship, which will be held May 27-30 at Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio.
Head coach John Crooks team claimed the automatic A-Sun berth by leading the league tournament wire-to-wire. Four Camels finished among the top 14 individuals, led by freshman Vaita Guillaume, who shot 69-69-76—214 and placed second.
Zak Drescher, Matt Moot and Isak Pettersen tied for 14th at the A-Sun tourney at five-over 221. Freshman Mitch Gray tied for 23rd (223).
Campbell’s league title was its first since 1999. The Camels will make their first regional team appearance after CU individuals earned individual invitations on four previous occasions. Georges Plumet (1998, 1999), Simon Dunn (2002) and Fredric Sundberg (2007) each represented CU previously in regional competition.
“Over the last four years, I’ve served on the NCAA Golf Committee and have been involved in working the NCAA Championships from an official capacity,” said 19th-year CU head coach John Crooks. “I can’t tell you how delighted I am to be back at the regionals, this time as a coach.”
Hosted by the University of Central Florida and the Central Florida Sports Commission, the NCAA Regional at Red Tail is one of six men’s regional events around the country. Top five schools and top individual not on those teams at Red Tail, Galloway (N.J.) National Golf Club, the University of Texas GC (Austin, Texas), Lake Merced GC (Daly City, Calif.), The Club at Olde Stone (Bowling Green, Ky.) and Karsten Creek GC (Stillwater, Okla.) will head to the NCAA finals.
