USF/Waterlefe Invitational final results USF/Waterlefe Invitational final results

BRADENTON, FLA. – Campbell shot a three-over par 291 on Tuesday to win the USF/Waterlefe Invitational women’s golf tournament.  The Lady Camels finished the event, which was shortened to 36 holes due to thunderstorms on Monday, with a total of 581 strokes (290-291) for a new school two-round record.

All five Campbell golfers finished among the top 20 individuals in the 87-player field.  Junior Mary Mattson shot a one-under-par 71 on Tuesday and tied for eighth-place at even-par 144.

Campbell claimed its first tournament crown of 2008-09 by nine strokes over host South Florida (590).  Nova Southeastern was third (592), followed by Florida International (595) and Coastal Carolina (597) in the 16-school field.

As a team, the Camels recorded 26 birdies – second only to FIU’s 27 – and 119 pars, which trailed only South Florida (124).  Campbell led the field in par 3 (plus-two) and par-4 (plus-five) scoring.

Sophomore Sandra Angulo, who shared the first-round lead Monday with a two-under-par 70, tied for 10th at plus-one 145 (70-75), while fellow CU sophomore Sarah Bejgrowicz shot a collegiate career-low 72 on Tuesday and tied for 10th (74-72—146).

Campbell freshman Michelle Koh shot 75-73—148 and placed 16th, followed by junior Belen Diaz Cisneros, who tied for 17th at five-over 149 (73-76).

Aruka Felgueroso of Coastal Carolina won the individual title at minus-three 141 (70-71), one stroke better than a five-way tie for runner-up.

Mattson had seven birdies, third-highest in the field, while Koh and Angulo each finished with six birds.  Diaz Cisneros and Bejgrowicz each recorded 26 pars over 36 holes, the sixth-most in the tourney.

“It was an outstanding performance,” said head coach John Crooks.  “Our ladies were very consistent and I’m very proud of them.”

Campbell’s 581 total for 36 holes broke the school record of 587 (300-287) the team fired on Oct. 9, 2006 at the Shoot-out at the Legends in Franklin, Ind.  CU’s first-round score (290) was the third-lowest in the program’s 20-year history.

Crooks ranks second among all active Division I women’s coaches in tournament victories with 58, trailing only Dan Brooks of Duke (107).  His Campbell women’s teams have won a tournament in all 18 years in which he has served as head coach.
