What measures or precautions are being taken by the Athletic Department to eliminate staph infections for our athletes? Answer: Mr. Stubbs,
Thank you for your question and for your interest in the health and well-being of our student-athletes. There are several things that our Athletic Department, as a whole, does to help prevent staph infections or any other type of infection. Some of those steps include the following:
Our first step is education and promotion of proper hygiene to our athletes; this includes washing hands, taking showers (using soap!), wearing shoes/sandals in locker room areas, covering open wounds, etc.
In addition, our athletic training staff utilizes anti-bacterial/anti-microbial cleaners on our treatment and taping tables as well as the equipment that is used in our area. Each table/machine is wiped down with the cleaner after each use and again at the end of the day. Our strength & conditioning staff also follows similar cleaning procedures. Practice, game equipment, and lockers can also are also disinfected periodically with the same cleaner that we use in the athletic training room.
Our athletic training staff assists the athletes in cleaning and covering open wounds and sores so that risk of infection is kept to a minimum and risk of spreading infection is lowered. Also, during this past year, our staff began using laundry chemicals that include an anti-bacterial/anti-microbial detergent.
If in the rare occasion a student-athlete does contract a staph infection, we take strict precautions including the removal of the athlete from contact with other players/areas until he or she is no longer at risk of spreading the infection.
I hope this information helps answer your questions. The care and treatment of our student-athletes is extremely important and we do take a number of precautions to best ensure their continued well-being. Name: Leon I'm planning on coming to college when I finish high school, and I want to know type of sports I could get into.
Answer:
Leon, Thank you for your e-mail and interest in Campbell University. Campbell University has recreation, intramural, club as well as varsity athletic opportunities. Our NCAA Division I athletics program has a total of 20 sports and the majority of those programs compete in the Atlantic Sun Conference. More information on our varsity sports teams can be found at www.GoCamels.com. Information on our recreation, intramural and club sports programs can be found at http://www.campbell.edu/sl/Recreation/index.html. Again, thank you for your interest and best wishes! Stan Williamson Director of Athletics Campbell University Name: Trey I recently heard someone bring up "Humphrey" the live camel and I am curious of what happened to the camel, and why dont we have him now?
Answer: The "live" camel, Humphrey, was around campus several years ago when he was a younger camel and could be "handled" without difficulties. A full-grown male camel could be a liability problem around groups of people without proper supervision and training. We do not have those resources readily available in our area. Humphrey is older and much larger now and is actually owned by the former Director of Athletics, Mr. Tom Collins. Currently, Tom houses Humphrey at a wildlife farm in the Fayetteville area. Thanks for your interest in Humphrey. Stan Williamson Director of Athletics Campbell University

I was planning on attending Campbell University after I ETS from the military, and was wondering how to tryout for either the baseball or basketball team.
Answer:
Eric, Thank you for your interest in Campbell University as well as your service in the military. Any Campbell University student can "tryout" for one of our varsity athletic teams as long as they are eligible under NCAA rules. The best place to start that process is to talk with the head coach of the appropriate sport. In baseball, please contact Coach Chris Wiley. In men's basketball, the head coach is Robbie Laing. All of our coaches' e-mail and phone information can be found on our web site at www.GoCamels.com. Thanks and best wishes! Stan Williamson Director of Athletics Campbell University

I am a current student at Campbell; my major is sports management. I want to be an Athletic Director; want advise or direction, can you give me. Everybody say, try to work at the high school level first, then apply to colleges.
Answer:
Anthony, Based on your stated desire to be an Athletic Director, I suggest two primary objectives: 1) Work toward the completion of your undergraduate and at least a master's degree and then consider working toward a doctorate. The degrees will not make you smarter but it will impact your credibility with the academic community. Also, having some diversity in your degrees could be helpful as well. For instance, with a sports management undergraduate, you might want to consider a masters degree in education or business. 2) Get as much experience as possible within an intercollegiate athletics program. Whether in a full-time, part-time, or even a volunteer position, that experience with an intercollegiate athletics program will provide increased opportunities. Also, it is an advantage to work in different areas within an athletics department such as compliance, academics, sports information, marketing/promotions, athletic training, fund raising, business, etc. Also, experience shows that it is much easier staying in an NCAA intercollegiate athletics program than it is to work at the high school level and then go back to the college level. That transition back to college can be difficult. Your next step should be to look for any opportunity to work within an intercollegiate athletics program. Since you are a student at Campbell, I suggest you visit with me or with Ms. Debbie Richardson about working within the Campbell University Athletics program. We will be happy to visit with you about any of this as well as provide you with some opportunities to gain experience in many of the areas listed above. Comment: Name: Helen Fadness
What happens to scholarship money offered to students who don't come to the school? Is it ever offered to another student? What determines who gets scholarship money? How much is usually given (women's soccer, in particular)? Thanks in advance for your answers.
Answer: Helen, Thank you for your interest in Campbell University Athletics. We do offer great educational opportunities for young people who want a quality education while competing in NCAA Division I athletics. As to scholarships, our program has an overall athletics scholarship budget that is divided into individual sport budgets. Each male and female sport is provided with a specific number of scholarship equivalencies budget which is based on many factors including NCAA maximum limits and conference averages to ensure the competitiveness of each sport program. (By the way, our scholarship budget and actual number of student-athletes follow Campbell's ongoing commitment to Title IX compliance.) Student-athletes are provided with various amounts of scholarships on an annual basis and each sport generally uses all the scholarship funding available to that sport. Our scholarship budget is used for the traditional academic year as well as sometimes providing academic funding for some summer school opportunities. For the majority of our sports, the recruiting process allows for those scholarship funds to be used very effectively by providing funding to those who decide to make Campbell their college home. I am very proud of our student-athletes, coaches and staff who work hard and use our valuable resources very efficiently and effectively. We sincerely appreciate the support of the many individuals who make these opportunities possible. Thank you for your question and Go Camels! Stan Williamson

Have we ever had a fan inducted into the CU sports hall of fame? If not, why? LOVE the new website!
Answer: Shane, Thanks for the e-mail and support for the new web site. The Campbell University Athletics Hall of Fame has inducted former players, administrators, and others who have made significant contributions to Campbell University Athletics. Just as an athlete would have to be a very special former athlete, a fan would have to be a very special fan who contributed in many different ways over a number of years. However, a fan or supporter of magnitude has and can be inducted into the Hall of Fame. Thanks and Go Camels!
Comment: Name: Pam City: Rockingham State: N.C. Hello Stan: I am a 1987 graduate of CU. Campbell has come along way since the early 80's. The campus is beautiful and the athletic program is finally making strides to compete with other D-1 schools in reference to facilities . Keep up the great work. My question is: What is the process for nominating someone into the CU athletic Hall of Fame? Thanks for your time and go CU!
Response: Pam, Thank you for your e-mail and support of Campbell University. We are making great strides with our facilities and look forward to the benefits these improvements will bring to Campbell University. For the Campbell University Athletics Hall of Fame, anyone can send in recommendations for induction. It is helpful to provide as much information as possible about the recommended individuals. Please send those recommendations to me and I will ensure the Hall of Fame Committee reviews each nominee. The annual Hall of Fame induction ceremony takes place during Homecoming activities each fall. We sincerely appreciate the support of the many Campbell alumni like yourself. Thanks and Go Camels! Comment: Name: Carl City: Broadway State: N.C. Just a note to say thanks to your basketball faculty at Campbell. Coach Laing. Coach Harris and Coach Kennan were just phenomenal at the Father Son Camp. I am a PE teacher and a UNC-Chapel Hill alumni, and I have gone to this camp for the past two years with my son. Each time we have learned something new that I can integrate into my teaching as well as plant the seed of college in my 7 year old. Coach Laing is very approachable and is "hands on". Coach Kennan is one of the funnest and fired up about kids individuals you can ever hope to meet in the realm of teaching. You are very lucky that you employ teachers and not egos! Please continue this camp for years to come. My son is already talking about next year's Father Son camp. Thanks to Coach Laing or to whomever came up with this idea! Response: Mr. Bryan, Thank you so much for your kind words about our Men's Basketball staff and our Father/Son Basketball Camp. Coach Laing brought a great idea to enhance our basketball camp sessions. He and his staff have done a great job with all aspects of our summer camps and this special Father/Son session has been a "hit". We appreciate your participation in what we anticipate will be a growing aspect of our summer camps. We are blessed to have great people at Campbell who happen to be great teachers of the game; in this case men's basketball. Again, thank you for your encouraging words. I will pass these positive words along to Coach Laing. We will look forward to seeing you again. Hi I'm doing some research on sports rivalry. I just want to know who is your biggest rival. It does not matter if your rival belongs to your conference or not. Thanks for your help. Response:
For Campbell, our two biggest rivals are most likely Gardner-Webb University (Atlantic Sun Conference & in-state foe) and UNC-Wilmington. Most people don't know that Campbell and UNC-Wilmington are each others' longest continually running sports rivalry. Best wishes with your research.
