Facilities Questions
Question:

Name: Eric Bergemann

Hi Stan, I hope everything is going well with you. I noticed the plans
for the new football stadium ,which is awesome.. But what I am wondering
is what it would take for the plans to include a track around the
field?.. There are a good amount of schools who set up their track along
with their football stadium and it doesn't cost much more money but
provides for a nice multi-purpose facility.. Even Duke's football
stadium has a track around it, Duke also is able to get a lot of teams
to come to its Track Invitational which raises quite a bit of money. A
Track team can become self sufficient if they have a good invitational
that they host, however, we don't have the facilities for it. North
Carolina State's Raleigh Invitational hosts around 300 colleges which
all have to pay entry fee's and raise NC State a good amount of money. I
know that you are probably not opposed to the idea but I am wondering
what it would take on my part and on the community's part to influence
Campbell to put a track in along with the football field and stadium.
Thanks, Eric Bergemann

Answer:

Eric,

Thanks for your comments and questions regarding track.  A new track
facility has been a part of our planning discussions even before the
decision to add football as a varsity sport.  Including a track around
the new football field was considered as a possibility in our
discussions; however, it was determined to keep football and track in
two separate facilities.  A new track is still a very expensive endeavor
whether it is included inside a football stadium or not.  At this point,
we are making plans to build a new track in the near future.  The
support of track enthusiasts would be helpful in getting this proposed
track completed.  Stay posted as those track facility plans develop.

Question:

Name: S. Jones
City: Selma
State: NC

Comments:

With Campbell building the new gym and the addition recently of the training center what is the next project for the CU Athletic Dept.? I've heard rumors of a new track or possibly new facilities for the wrestling team. If you could please cast some light on what is to come in the near future.

Answer:
S. Jones,

The John W. Pope, Jr. Convocation Center is a tremendous project and all of our resources are being poured into that special project at this time. We hope to break ground with the Convocation Center in the fall of 2006 and construction will take 18 to 24 months. This facility will include many wonderful features including locker rooms, weight rooms, as well as a new wrestling practice area. Many individuals have been generous with their gifts but even more money is needed to complete the funding of this multi-purpose facility.

Even with this Convocation Center plan moving forward, we do have plans for other facility improvements including a plan for a new track and improvements to our Nisbet Tennis Center. Facility planning is a never-ending cycle and we will continually plan for the future of Campbell University Athletics.

Thank you for your question and interest in Campbell University Athletics.

Comments:

Mr. Williamson,

I was just checking up on the camel web page and saw the new field house is almost finished. That is so great I can't wait to see it when I stop by in the fall.

I just wanted to wish all the teams the best of luck in their competitions this fall. And I will be sure to cheer them on when they play away games at Gardner-Webb. (I will be in grad school there for the next two years)

Please tell your family and everyone in the athletic department I say hello.

Go Camels!!

Heather Lee

Answer:

Heather,

Thanks for your e-mail. It's always great hearing from a Campbell graduate. Best wishes to you on your graduate school work at Gardner-Webb.

We are all very excited about the new McLeod Athletic Training Facility. We are moving into the facility with pre-season practice for men's and women's soccer to begin next week. This facility is a great addition to Campbell University and will be a great place for Campbell student-athletes.

Again, it's great hearing from you and we look forward to seeing you in the near future.

Thank you for your comments. We are making progress at the Eakes Complex with the soccer & softball fields looking great and a new building to house our men's soccer, women's soccer and softball teams beginning this fall.

Additionally, this new field house will include our new sports medicine area. We are all looking forward to seeing the positive results of the improvements being made at the Eakes Complex. Thanks for your e-mail; it's always great hearing from former student-athletes!

Question:

Name: Steve

City: Bethelehm

State: Pa

Comments:

I will be arriving in the fall of 2005 as a freshman golfer at Campbell University. I know coach John Crooks has his players work out together in the gym.

I have seem the school but did not have a chance to see the weight room and the fitness facilities I will be using for the next four years.

What kind of set-up do you have at Campbell and are their plans to increase the fitness facilities?

Answer:

Steve,

Thank you for your question. We look forward to seeing you at Campbell. We do have a weight room for student-athletes in Carter Gym and that area is used by the general student population at limited times. The general student population also has access to a weight room housed in one of the dorms.

Additionally, we have the Harris Hitting Facility that houses batting cages for baseball and softball; that facility also includes a limited weight equipment & fitness area used by of our student-athletes.

We do plan to have a much larger weight and fitness area inside the new Convocation Center. Campbell University is working hard at planning and fund raising toward the construction of the new Center and it is at the top of Campbell's capital projects list.

As golfer you are aware that Campbell has one of the finest collegiate golf facilities anywhere in the 36-hole course at Keith Hills Country Club. We look forward to your arrival at Campbell as well as your use of all of our facilities.

Question:

Name: Clint Fuller

City: Buies Creek

Comments:

With the concern of the new facility for recruiting, what is the time frame for the project get underway? Also, when is the new fieldhouse for Soccer and Softball to be completed? Keep up the awesome work!!!

Answer:

Clint,

Thank you for your question. Many of the Campbell faithful are asking similar questions.

First, I am happy to report that the new Athletic Training Field House construction has started and we hope to be in that building by the start of classes in August 2004. This new facility will house our Athletic Training Room as well as offices and locker rooms for men's soccer, women's soccer and softball. In addition, this facility (being built adjacent to the Eakes soccer field) will provide upgraded rest rooms for fans attending our soccer and softball games.

The proposed Convocation/Student Center has been talked about and needed for a very long time at Campbell. We are now on the right track for making this facility a reality. Little and Associates (including architectural team members HOK) have been hired to serve as the architects on this facility and have been meeting with various Campbell groups over the last several months. A program outline for the Convocation/Student Center has been developed and we hope to see some architectural drawings within the next couple of months. However, the real key to making this facility a reality is the funding. Campbell has received well over 1 million in gifts specifically for this facility but it will take 18 to 20 million to fund this project. Campbell University will begin construction on this facility when the funds are raised. After the funds are raised, construction time is estimated at approximately 24 months.

We sincerely appreciate those who support Campbell University and look forward to those supporters being able to enjoy this Convocation/Student Center. Thank you for your excellent question as well as your interest in and support of Campbell University.

Question:

Name: John Black

City: Buies Creek

Comments:

Mr. Williamson,

First off, congratulations to you for coming up with this neat idea of "Ask the AD."

My question is, are you planning on investing in a new wrestling room for the wrestling team? If so, is there a feasible time frame. I feel that the room is extremely inadequate for a division one school. I know that is a big reason why it is difficult to recruit and keep the wrestlers here at Campbell.

Thank you,

John Black

Answer:

John,

Thank you for your great question. We are planning a new wrestling room to be included in the proposed Convocation/Student Center. This new area will provide a great place for our wrestling team to work.

Thank you for your interest and for your contributions to the Campbell wrestling program.
