Mr.Williamson I will like to let you know that I am a basketball player for Sussex Central High School and I am strongly thinking about coming to your school. If its not any trouble can you and the coach make a trip down to a couple of games to see how good of a player I am?

Answer:

Tyrone,

Thank you for your e-mail and your interest in Campbell University.  Due to NCAA regulations, we are limited in some of the ways we can contact prospective student-athletes.  The best first step in contacting our coaches is to complete the online questionnaire at our web site, www.GoCamels.com, click on “Prospective Student-Athletes” where you will find the sports-specific questionnaires.  This completed questionnaire will greatly aid our coaches in evaluating your situation.  Some other things you might consider doing are: 1. Ask your high school coach to contact our head coach, 2. Send a tape or disk of some of your games, 3. Make an “unofficial” campus visit.  Also, the NCAA rules do not prohibit you from calling our coaches; however, our coaches have some limitations on their contacts with you.  I hope this information is helpful to you.  Again, thank you for your interest and best wishes.

I am a senior attending Hancock Central High School. I will be graduating on May 23rd 2008. I'm interested in playing football and basketball. What do I need to do in order to be considered for a scholarship from your school in either or both sports?

Answer:

Jontarius,

Thank you for your interest in Campbell University.  The first step for anyone interested in becoming a member of one of our varsity sports teams is to go to our web site, www.GoCamels.com.  On the front page of the web site, you will find a link “Prospective Student-Athletes” that takes you to a sport-specific questionnaire.  This completed questionnaire will provide our coaches with the information needed to evaluate your situation.  After completing the online questionnaire, a potential student-athlete should then call one of our coaches in your sport of choice to get more information.  The phone numbers and e-mail addresses of our coaches are listed on the web site.  Following this process will ensure your information and situation is reviewed.  We appreciate your interest and encourage you to visit our web site for more information.  Best wishes!

Why do you not play on Sunday when traveling and weather causes you to not play on Saturday? Student then have to miss school Mon and maybe Tues (if they oversleep) by not allowing exceptions on Sunday play?

Answer:

Guy,

Campbell University has had a long-standing policy of not participating in athletics competition on Sunday. This "No Sunday Play" policy was instituted years ago by the Campbell University President and Board of Trustees. In addition, this policy is supported and accommodated in the bylaws of the Atlantic Sun Conference. All members of the Atlantic Sun Conference agree to this policy in regards to competition against Campbell University. Please know that every effort is made to avoid extending weekend conference competition to Monday by adjusting game times when necessary and possible. However, there are times when this Monday competition cannot be avoided.

I was just wondering if you have a list of possible head coaches for the
CU baseball program?

Answer:

Derek,

Thank you for your interest in the Fighting Camels Baseball program. We
are excited about the over 60 individuals interested in becoming the
Head Baseball Coach at Campbell University. As a private institution,
we do not release the names of applicants for any open position in order
to protect all parties involved. We do plan to announce a new Head
Baseball Coach around the first week of June immediately following this
current baseball season.

What are your plans and desired time frame for selecting a new head baseball coach? What characteristics, age, personality type, experience, etc. are you looking for? Will you give preference to Campbell alums and/or current coaches? Will the new coach be free to hire his own assistants? Thank you.

Answer:

Jim,

Thanks for your question and interest in Campbell University Baseball. We are currently collecting information on candidates for our Head Baseball Coach position. We have received interest from a strong pool of candidates. Our search process will continue for several months through the end of this baseball season. We hope to name a new head baseball coach after the completion of this current season which will fall during the first few weeks of June.

As with all our coaching positions, we will look for a coach who "fits" well with the mission and purpose of Campbell University. We will want a coach who has some experience winning at any level of baseball but especially at the NCAA Division I level. Factors such as experience as a head coach, experience developing players, experience recruiting players, team/staff community involvement and the academic performance of players coached are all factors to be considered. Also, having been a part of the Campbell University community as a coach or a player is a helpful factor as well. These are all major factors to be considered in selecting the next head baseball coach at Campbell.

We are blessed to have a strong group of capable baseball coaches already on staff here at Campbell. The new Head Baseball Coach will be given the opportunity to hire assistant coaches, where appropriate. At this point, it is much too early in the process to determine what exactly will happen in regards to assistant coaches.

Thank you for your interest and support...Go Camels!

My son Greg is a diver. I was told that there was a diving team for men. Is that true? He also plays tennis and runs cross country.

Could you give me any information about those sports?

Answer:

Mr. Davies,
Thank you for your questions and interest in Campbell University. Campbell does not sponsor men's swimming and diving. We added women's swimming during the 2004-05 academic year but, as of this date, have no plans to add men's swimming and diving.
Campbell does sponsor very successful men's tennis and men's cross country programs. Our Head Tennis Coach is David Johnson and our Head Cross Country Coach is Ken Frenette. These coaches' information as well as more program information can be found on our web site at www.GoCamels.com. Again, thank you for your interest and best wishes!

Is there a chance with the men's soccer team doing so well that Campbell will host the men's tournament next year? If so, what are the odds?

Answer:
Josh,

Thanks for your question. The Campbell University Men's Soccer team did have an outstanding season and we are all very proud of that Atlantic Sun Conference Championship team!

For the 2006 NCAA soccer season, the NCAA has changed its championship calendar which will move both the A-Sun Men's Soccer Tournament and the A-Sun Women's Soccer Tournament to the same weekend. I inform you of all this schedule information to say that we will be attempting to get both (men's & women's) A-Sun Conference tournaments to be held here at Campbell. Because of the field requirements in hosting so many games during one weekend, I do not believe we will be able to host both tournaments. However, I do believe there is a very good chance for Campbell to host at least one of the A-Sun soccer championships. We will do our best to get the 2006 Atlantic Sun Conference Men's Soccer Tournament to Buies Creek. Ultimately, the Atlantic Sun Conference bid process will determine the host locations for the 2006 soccer seasons.

We should get a final determination on the host locations for the 2006 A-Sun soccer tournaments by, or possibly before, April 2006. Thank you for your interest and support of the Fighting Camels.

Dear Mr. Stan Williamson,

My name is Ashley Messier. I am a senior at Waynesville High School. I am looking at coming to your college. I participated in Cross-Country this year and would like to continue participating in Cross-Country while in college. How likely would it be for me to join the cross-country team at Campbell University, if I get excepted? Thank you for your time.

Answer:
Ashley,
Thank you for your interest in Campbell University and our Cross Country program. The first step in becoming a part of any of our sports teams is to go to our web site, www.GoCamels.com, and then click on the sport (Cross Country) and then click on "Recruiting" which takes you to an online questionnaire. This online questionnaire once completed and submitted will greatly aid our coaches in evaluating your situation.

We do have a number of individuals who enjoy running on the cross country team at various levels of competition. If interested, please contact our Head Cross Country Coach, Ken Frenette. Coach Frenette can be reached at (910) 893-1356 or by e-mail at: frenette@campbell.edu.

Again, thank you for your interest in Campbell University. Best wishes and we hope that you will become a member of the Fighting Camels.

Is there going to be some men's basketball games on TV this year?

Answer:
Mr. Martin,
Thank you for your question about our men's basketball team being on television. At this point, the only game scheduled for television will be our Atlantic Sun Conference game at Gardner-Webb University on Friday, January 13, 2006. Mr. Williamson:
Please extend my congratulations to Coach Hess and the members of the men's soccer team. What a great season! I was thoroughly impressed by Coach Hess and by the demeanor of the men's soccer athletes during the events of the alumni weekend. The season results only confirm in my mind how fortunate Campbell University is to have such an excellent coach.

When is CU going to get a football team? (Not intramural!) My wife and I would love to drive down there and see the Fighting Camels on the gridiron after a fall homecoming parade.

Is there hope?

Answer:
Todd,

Thanks for your question about the possibility of football at Campbell University. Campbell did have a very successful football program back in the 1940's and 1950's. There are no specific plans in place to bring back football at this time. However, football has been discussed for a number of years and is a strong possibility for the future.

Our first priority at this point is to complete the John W. Pope, Jr. Convocation Center which will enhance all our sports programs as well as the university as a whole. As we get closer to the completion of that major goal of the Convocation Center, a football program may not be far behind.

Thank you for your interest and support of the Fighting Camels!

Can you explain the conference affiliations of Campbell University?

Answer:

Bob,

Thank you for your question. There has been a lot of movement in conference memberships across the board at all levels of NCAA Division I. As you may remember, Campbell was a charter member of the Big South Conference and then moved to the Atlantic Sun Conference for the 1994-95 seasons. The conferences you mentioned are losing some members but are also gaining some members. The Atlantic Sun Conference has had its share of membership changes as well. However, most of these membership changes revolve around the sport of football.

Campbell's student-athletes have faired well overall in the Atlantic Sun Conference. Just about every year, Campbell finishes first or second among private schools in the Atlantic Sun Conference All Sports competition.

Campbell has examined other opportunities for conference membership. We are associate members of the Colonial Athletic Association for our Wrestling team as well as associate members of the Northeast Conference for our Swimming team. To this point, the Atlantic Sun Conference has been the home for the majority of our sports teams and a good fit for Campbell University. The Atlantic Sun Conference includes other private institutions (Mercer, Stetson, Jacksonville, Gardner-Webb, Belmont, and Lipscomb) as members and allows Campbell to maintain the "no Sunday play" policy for our student-athletes.

In any evaluation of a potential conference membership, we will examine the travel required, level of competition and mix of teams/sports, types of institutions, and our ability to maintain the "no Sunday play" policy. Campbell University will always want to maintain the type of conference membership that will give our institution the greatest benefit.

Thank you for your support of Campbell University Athletics !

Question:

Name: Eric Selinsky

City: Buies Creek

Comments:

Mr. Williamson, I am a freshmen athletic training student here at Campbell and I was curious what your role is in regards to the Athletic trainers and that whole program.

Thanks, Eric Selinsky

Answer:

Eric,

Thank you for your question. These areas of responsibility and the different roles can be confusing at times.

The Athletic Training curriculum (academic classes) falls under the responsibility of Campbell's Exercise Science Department. Our full-time Athletic Trainers have a portion of their job description dedicated to teaching these classes and providing administrative support to the academic curriculum.

My responsibility as Director of Athletics is to oversee the actual care of Campbell's student-athletes. The Athletic Training staff (full-time & part-time) are funded through the Athletics Department. The Head Athletic Trainer reports directly to me and we work together to ensure quality sports medical care for all student-athletes.

Thanks for your great question. I look forward to seeing you in our new Athletic Training Field House.
