SORRENTO, FLA. – Zak Drescher is tied for 24th individually and Campbell sits 13th in the team standings after Thursday’s first round of the NCAA Southeast Regional men’s golf championship at RedTail Golf Club.
Despite sitting through a nearly four hour delay due to lightning, Drescher played the final 13 holes six-under par and sits at one-under-par 70 heading into Friday’s second round. After playing the first four holes five-over, Drescher scored eagle on the par-4 fifth and followed with three birdies during his next four holes.
Atlantic Sun Conference champion Campbell shot a nine-over 293 on the par-71, 7136-yard RedTail layout and is one stroke ahead of Indiana in the 14-school field. Host Central Florida shot a 16-under-par 268 and leads Arizona (270) by two strokes. South Carolina and Charlotte are tied for third at 11-under 273, while Florida State is fifth at minus-seven 277.
Kentucky is sixth at 281, while top-ranked Georgia is tied for seventh place with Augusta State and Georgia State at two-under 282.
The top five teams, plus the low individual not on a qualifying team, in each of the six regional championships will advance to the NCAA Championship, May 27-30 at Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio.
Tarquin MacManus of Arizona sits atop the individual leader board following an 8-under-par 63. Corey Nagy of Charlotte is second (65), followed by a four-way tie at five-under 66 that includes UCF teammates David Johnson and Brad Schneider, plus Matthew Savage of Florida State and Stefan Wiedergruen of Charlotte.
On Thursday, 44 players shot par or better in the 75-man field.
Campbell freshman Mitch Gray played his final six holes at two-under-par to finish the day at one-over 72 and tied for 45th-place. Sophomore Matt Moot shot 75, freshman Vaita Guillaume 76 and senior Isak Pettersen 83.
