BUIES CREEK, N.C. - The Campbell softball team (1-1) started the 2010 season with a split doubleheader with UNC Wilmington (1-1) on Thursday, Feb. 11 at the Eakes Athletic Complex. The Camels were able to win the first game 8-0, but took a tough 3-2 loss in the second game.

Campbell sophomore righty Christina Melton (1-0) was the story of the first game in throwing a one-hitter and carrying a perfect game until two were retired in the fourth inning. Melton would later walk a batter in the fifth to end up only allowing two base runners and striking out five in the run-shortened five inning game.

The Camels used a steady offense to put together eight runs on eight hits in the first game. CU also was able to draw eight walks. Seniors Robin Leathers Cassie Webb and Brittany Stanley all tallied a pair of hits with Stanley also driving in a pair of runs. Junior Melissa Elks also totaled two hits. Junior Keeli Michael was able to draw a pair of walks and crossed the plate twice.

CU started the scoring off with three runs in the first inning of the first game. Leathers singled up the middle and went all the way to third on the fielding error by the UNCW centerfielder. Junior Katie Hinton walked and then stole second. After a ground out, sophomore Taylor McGee drove in Leathers with a sacrifice fly. Melton walked and Webb followed with a single up the middle to plate Hinton. After a walk, Stanley drove in Melton with a single.

The Camels scored four more run in the third inning with Webb started the rally with a leadoff double. Freshman Sarah Forgacs ran for Webb. Keeli Michael reached on fielder's choice that saw Forgacs able to scamper back to second. Stanley then doubled down the left field line to score Forgacs. Leather then singled to score Michael. Goldbach, who was inserted to run for Stanley, scored on a bases loaded walk to Hinton. Junior Amanda Miller drove in Elks, who had reached on an infield single, with a sacrifice fly.

Campbell was able to score their eighth and final run of the game in the fourth on Elks' RBI single up the middle.

The second game saw UNCW take the early advantage with a run in the top of the second. Katie Hournard walked, moved to second on ground out, advanced to third on fly out and scored on a close play at the plate off a wild pitch.

CU tied the score in the bottom of the frame when Lauren Stephan doubled, moved to third on a fielding error and scored on freshman Sarah Ling's ground out.

The Seahawks took the lead for good in the third. Laura Sykes walked and scored all the way from first on Ashley Shingleton's double to right.

The Camels drew a run closer in the bottom of the sixth on Stephan's home run. The blast was her third hit of the game and first home run of the season.

The bottom of the seventh proved to be exciting for Campbell. Ling started the near rally with a one-out single to center and moved to second on a ground out. Leathers was then intentionally walked. The walk was the senior's third of the game. Melton pinch hit and singled to deep in the hole at short to load the bases. Miller worked the count to 3-2 before a ground out ended the game.

The loss went to Stanley (0-1). The senior allowed all three runs in 5.1 innings worked and struck out six. Freshman Brittany Arnn made her debut in the circle for Campbell and struck out three in 1.2 innings pitched. Sammie Lisowsky (1-0) allowed just one earned run and five hits in seven innings for UNCW.

CU will now host Longwood in a noon start on Saturday, Feb. 13 at the Eakes Athletic Complex.
