BUIES CREEK, N.C. -- Jonathan Rodriguez and Preston Dodson registered double-doubles and Campbell opened its men's basketball season with a 76-52 victory over St. Andrews Friday night at Gore Arena.
Rodriguez (19) and Dodson (16) led four Camels in double figures. Lorne Merthie added 13 and William Kossangue 11 for the Camels, who held a 54-33 edge on the boards against the Division II Knights.
A junior from South Mills, N.C., Dodson hit 6-of-11 from the field and 4-of-5 from the line and hit career highs in points and rebounds. Six of his 11 boards came on the offensive end in 29 minutes.
Rodriguez logged his 40th career double-double with a 12-rebound performance (8 offensive) and is just two shy of the Atlantic Sun Conference record. The senior from Bayamon, Puerto Rico moved into fifth place on Campbell's all-time scoring list past Mark Mocnik, who had 1635 points from 1988-93. In 92 career games, Rodriguez has scored 1650 points.
The Camels (1-0) closed the game on a 15-1 run for their largest lead of the contest (24). CU shot just 40 percent from the floor, but held a 29-4 advantage in second-chance points, thanks to 26 offensive rebounds.
The Camels also converted 21 St. Andrews into a 23-13 edge in points off turnovers and outscored the Knights 44-20 in the paint.
Junard Hartley dealt five assists and grabbed a career-high five steals, while Chris Reynolds came off the bench to add six points and pull down a career-best nine rebounds.
St. Andrews shot 35.8 percent from the field and made just 10-of-19 (.526) from the line. Campbell finished 16-of-28 from the stripe (.571).
Rodriguez and Dodson scored nine points each in the first half as the Camels led 33-26 at the break.
The Camels return to action on Tuesday in a 7:00 p.m. tip-off at home against East Carolina.
