BUIES CREEK, N.C. -Campbell
University redshirt junior
defensive lineman Charles Fiore and redshirt junior tight end Mike Stryffeler have
both been named to the ESPN The Magazine/Academic
All-District 3 Football University Division first team by the College Sports
Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), the organization announced this
morning.
A Kernersville, N.C. native, Fiore has started all eight
games this season at defensive end. Fiore owns a grade-point average of 3.47 as
a religion major. He is a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and has
served as the team's representative on the Student-Athlete Advisory Council
(SAAC) in each of his four years on campus, while also making the Dean's List
three times. On the gridiron this season, Fiore has amassed a total of 21 tackles,
including a 5.5 tackles for loss on the year. He had a career-best five tackles
including a tackle for loss against Birmingham-Southern on Sept. 12.
Fiore also was a CoSIDA First-Team District 3 selection last
season. In 2008, the religion major also earned academic recognition with a First-Team
Academic selection by the Pioneer Football League. Fiore is expected to
graduate during the winter of 2009 and begin attending seminary school next
spring. With his expected graduation he will become the first Campbell football player to receive his
diploma since the program was revived.
Stryffeler earned his first all-district selection as a tight
end after posting a cumulative 3.74 grade-point average in exercise and sports
science through his collegiate career. This season the Sanford, N.C.
native has played in all eight games and is second on the team with 19 catches
and 234 yards. Stryffeler is 20th in the Pioneer Football League in receptions
per game (2.38) and 22nd in receiving yards a contest (29.25). He had three
catches for 70 yards against Old Dominion on Oct. 17. As a redshirt sophomore, the
converted quarterback played in 10 games with eight receptions for 59 yards.
Stryffeler was also named to the PFL's Academic Honor Roll last season.
Fiore and Stryffeler are two of the 24 Pioneer Football
League players to earn CoSIDA Academic All-District honors this season. Marist College
tallied five on the first team for All-District 1 (Ray Fiumefreddo, Greg
Whipple, John Van Aman, Timothy Moller and Terrence Turner). Dayton had five on the District 4 First Team
(Matt Smyth, Ben Welsh, Sean Heenan, Brandon Wingeier and Kalen Hemmelgarn) and three on the
second team (Tyler Schultz, Scott Horcher and Joe Ries) for a total of eight
student-athletes. Butler
was represented by three players on the first team in District 5 (Mark Giacomantonio,
Spencer Summerville and Grant Hunter). Valparaiso
(Adam Rundh - District 5) and Drake (Sean Kitts - District 7) also had
representation on first teams. Drake also placed a pair on the second team in
Spencer Cady and Tyler Moorehead. In District 3, Campbell's Fiore and
Stryffeler were joined by two from Davidson (Peter Kidwell and Aaron Saltzman)
on the first team.
Fiore, Stryffeler and the rest of the first-team
all-district selections will now be eligible for the Academic All-America team,
which will be announced Nov. 23.
CoSIDA's 1,800 members in the United
States and Canada nominate players for the ESPN The Magazine / Academic All-America® recognition. To be eligible, a
student-athlete must be at least a sophomore in academic standing, have at
least a 3.30 cumulative grade-point average, and be a starter or a key reserve
on his or her team.
CoSIDA members vote on the all-district teams; then a
national panel selects the Academic All-America squads from all first-team
all-district choices. District 3 includes all NCAA Division I schools in Florida, Georgia,
North Carolina, South
Carolina and Virginia.
