DeLAND, FLA. - Freshmen Keegan Terry and Justin Smith provided the goals and Campbell took sole possession of first place in the Atlantic Sun Conference men's soccer standings Thursday night with a 2-0 victory at Stetson.
Campbell improved to 6-7-1 overall, 5-0-1 in the A-Sun, while Stetson dropped to 10-2-2, 4-2-1 in the league. The Hatters entered the match rated eighth in the latest South Region rankings. After starting the year 1-6, Campbell stands 5-1-1 in its last seven matches.
"I'm proud of the resolve we showed in our play," said Campbell head coach Doug Hess. "Our guys showed that they wanted this game tonight. I was particularly proud to keep a clean sheet against a potent attack like Stetson. They pulled us apart a couple of times, but in those moments we managed to bend, not break."
The Camels limited the A-Sun's highest-rated offense (2.2 goals per game) to just three shots on target and Campbell keeper Ted Awana registered his second-consecutive (third overall) shutout.
Campbell went in front in the 38th minute through Terry, who recorded his third goal of the year, all against A-Sun competition. Mitchell Cardenas fed to the ball to Terry at the top of the area and the freshman from Carrollton, Texas dribbled through the defense and toe-poked the ball into the net.
Leading 1-0 at the break, the Camels nearly added another in the 49th minute. Nick Burdett's shot hit the post and caromed across the face of the goal, but Bryan Dornseif was unable to get a foot on the ball before it went out for a goal kick.
The Camels doubled the lead in the 67th minute when Vince Petrasso set up Smith for his league-leading eighth assist of the season. With Stetson keeper Logan Potter out of his goal, Smith scored his third goal of the year.
Campbell finished with a 23-16 advantage in shots, including 9-3 in shots on goal. Awana finished with three saves, while Potter had seven in the Hatter nets.
Campbell is unbeaten in its last 18 league regular season matches (16-0-2), dating to a 3-2 loss at Lipscomb on Oct. 13, 2007. CU also sits 17-1-2 in its last 20 matches in the month of October.
The Camels conclude their four-game road stretch on Saturday in a 7:00 p.m. kick-off at Florida Gulf Coast.
Thursday's contest not only matched the top two teams in the 2009 A-Sun standings, but the program's with the best league record over the last five years. Since the start of the 2005 season, Campbell owns a 30-4-5 record in A-Sun regular season play. Stetson's 25-9-6 mark is second.
Campbell is now unbeaten in its last five matches (4-0-1) against the Hatters since Stetson knocked off the top-seeded Camels 2-1 in the 2005 A-Sun final at Macon, Ga.
