NORFOLK, Va. -Campbell's football team (1-5, 0-3 Pioneer Football
League) put up a valiant effort and hung with the first scholarship program the
team had ever faced into the fourth quarter, but fell to Old Dominion (5-2) by
a 28-17 score at S.B Ballard Stadium/Foreman Field on Saturday, Oct. 17. The Monarchs
were able to score 21 of the game's final 28 points. ODU scored 14 points in
the final period.
The Monarchs started the scoring on a 42-yard touchdown pass from
Thomas DeMarco to Reid Evans. The extra point from Drew Hareza was good to
increase the score to 7-0 with 12:19 remaining in the first quarter. The drive
covered six plays and 75 yards in 2:41.
Each of Campbell's
first two offensive drives were stopped by fumbles. The CU defense though were
able to get a defensive stop on the first try and forced a fumble themselves on
the second ODU attempt. The fumble was forced by redshirt sophomore Christian
Dixon and recovered by redshirt sophomore Jared Hart.
The Camels were able to tie the game up in the second quarter on
sophomore Rashaun Brown's 14-yard scamper. The redshirt sophomore Adam Willets'
extra point tied the score at seven all with 11:09 left in the second quarter.
The Campbell
drive covered 12 plays and 91 yards. Redshirt junior tight end Mike Stryffeler
had a 23-yard reception on the drive for CU.
CU took its first lead of the game on Willets 36-yard field goal
with 2:46 left in the first half. The field goal finished a 10 play 56-yard
drive in 5:56. Redshirt sophomore C.J. Oates had a 34-yard bruising run on the
drive for Campbell.
The Monarchs were able to change field position when Jonathan
Plisco's 76-yard punt pinned Campbell
on its own one-yard line. The play turned out to be the biggest momentum turner
in the game. After a defensive stop the Monarchs offense took over on the CU
39-yard line and took the lead back on DeMarco's 14-yard touchdown pass to Nick
Mayers. The Hareza extra point put ODU up 14-10 with 5:23 left in the third
quarter.
ODU added a touchdown to its lead on the 41-yard strike from DeMarco
to Mayers. The drive last one play and came directly after a CU pass
interference penalty. The Hareza extra point made the score 21-10 with 13:29
remaining in the game. The receiving touchdown was the second of the game for
Mayers.
Desmond Williams scored Old Dominion's final score from a yard out
to complete a 16 play 94-yard drive that covered 7:24.
The Camels were able to add a late touchdown on Polk's one yard run
with 2:36 left in the game. The drive was highlighted by Stryffeler's 39-yard
reception. The drive covered five plays, 56-yards in 1:15.
Campbell next returns home for a two-game stint at Barker-Lane
Stadium/Ed Gore Field starting on Oct. 24 with a Homecoming matchup with Pioneer
Football rival Butler (6-0, 3-0 PFL) at 1 p.m. CU will then host Morehead State
on Halloween on Saturday, Oct. 31 starting at 1 p.m.
