Campbell Football vs. Dayton

BUIES CREEK, N.C. -Campbell's football team (1-4, 0-3 Pioneer Football League) raced out to a 14-0 lead, but saw Dayton (4-1, 2-0 PFL) score 35 of the next 38 points in 35-17 win at Barker-Lane Stadium/Ed Gore Field on Saturday, Oct. 10.

The Camels struck first with a third-down 42-yard touchdown run from sophomore Rashaun Brown to finish off an eight-play 66-yard drive to start the game. The touchdown was Brown's first of the season. The freshman Samuel Eberwein's extra point was good to make the score 7-0 with 11:31 left in the first quarter.

The CU offense struck again on the first play of their second drive when redshirt junior quarterback Daniel Polk connected with sophomore receiver Paul Constantine on a 60-yard pass play. The Eberwein extra point was good to increase the score to 14-0 with 8:33 left in the first half.

The Flyers drew three points closer on their next drive on Nate Miller's 31-yard field goal at the 3:35 mark of the first quarter. The big play of the drive was the 30-yard reception from Tyler Savisky.

After another UD defensive stop, Miller knocked in his second field goal of the game to make the score 14-6 with 14:10 left in the second quarter.

The rest of the first half was a defensive battle until Dayton was able to tie the game on their last drive of the half on Steve Valentino's three-yard run to finish off a nine-play 68-yard drive that took 3:37 off the clock. Valentino was able to connect with Anthony Papp on the two-point conversion to tie the game at 14 all with 1:50 remaining in the first half

The Camels drove down the field to end the half but Eberwein's 39-field goal attempt came up short to keep the score at 14-14 at the break.

The Flyers took their first lead of the game on the opening drive of the second half with Valentino taking off and running 64-yards for the score. The Miller extra point increased the lead to 21-14. The touchdown was the second of the game for the senior.

The CU offense was able to pick a 36-yard Adam Willets field goal on their first possession of the third quarter to get the score to 21-17 with 9:19 left in the third quarter. The drive covered 36 yards in seven plays with redshirt junior Mike Stryffeler making a 23-yard reception.

Dayton, after blocking a punt and an illegal touch by the Campbell punter as he attempted to push the ball through the back of the endzone, started at the five-yard line and promptly scored a touchdown on Andrew Zapinski's run to increase the margin to 11 at 28-17 with :30 seconds remaining in the third quarter.

The UD offense kept it going on the ensuing drive with a Dan Jacobs rushing it in from five-yard out to make the final score 35-17.

Valentino rushed for a game-high 114 yards and two touchdowns. He also completed 23 passes for 241 yards. Brown ran for 55 yards on his seven carries for Campbell. The Camels were outgained 453 to 254. Redshirt sophomore Christian Dixon came up with an interception for Campbell. The CU defense has now forced a turnover in all five games this season and six straight overall.

"I thought we played four quarters much more intensely than what we had in the past," Coach Steele stated. "I still don't think we put together a complete football game yet. We had some opportunities to score plus we had a mistake in the kicking game. I told them if we could get into the fourth quarter with it being a one touchdown game that we would have a chance to win the game. I think we just escaped that. I think the team still gave us a good effort. We continue to show improvement weekly. We will just need to work hard next week and get ready to face Old Dominion."

Next the Camels briefly get out of conference play and head to Norfolk, Va. to take on Old Dominion on Saturday, Oct. 17 at 6 p.m.
