DeLAND, FLA. – Josue Soto scored the game’s only goal and Aaron Johnson made nine saves as Campbell shutout Stetson Saturday night in Atlantic Sun men’s soccer action at the Stetson Soccer Complex.
In a battle of two schools ranked among the South Region’s top-10, the Fighting Camels extended their unbeaten string to three matches (2-0-1) while improving to 5-2-1 on the year, 1-0-1 in the A-Sun. Stetson saw its four-match winning streak come to a close and fell to 5-3-0, 1-1-0. Campbell entered the game ranked ninth in the South, while Stetson was sixth.
A freshman from Monterrey, Mexico, Soto scored on a breakaway off Austin Skakle’s pass in the 52nd minute. The midfielder has scored in three-consecutive matches and leads the team with 11 points on five goals and one assist.
Johnson, the pre-season A-Sun all-conference keeper, posted his first shutout of the season and lowered his goals-against average to 1.08.
Saturday’s match was played in rainy conditions and included a half-hour delay for lightning. The contest also pitted the A-Sun’s pre-season favorite (Campbell) and against the pre-season number-two pick (Stetson) in the league coaches poll.
Stetson finished with a 15-3 edge in shots, including a 9-1 advantage in shots on goal.
Campbell stands 12-2-3 in A-Sun regular season matches since the start of the 2005 campaign.
The Fighting Camels ended a six-match string away from home with a 4-1-1 record; the only loss coming on Sept. 19 at third-ranked Virginia.
